So I hired a personal trainer....

So I've taken the plunge again and hired another personal trainer. My ****ing body fat is still apparently around 24% and I'm not at all happy about this. I'm going to try this guy for a 8 sessions (got 8 sessions with another trainer for my wife as well) for the total cost of 4 session with a full money back, no contract agreement. I don't care about the scale so much, but the body fat percentage should have been at least a few percent lower in my mind. I'm gaining muscle and that's great but I'm simply not losing the gut and chin at the pace I wanted to.

Also I'm redoubling my effort to clean up my diet in terms of what I'm eating.

What's your height and weight?
Cut out the carbs.

5'8", 215lbs. I've gained a lot of lean muscle over the last several months. I simply can't cut all carbs. I get sluggish and not worth a **** when I do that. I'm going to reduce them but they are a part of my diet. I'm not trying to simply cut fat mind you...I'm working to gain muscle and strength as well. So I have to balance my diet but no carbs just doesn't work for me for some reason.

It takes awhile for your body to adjust to a high protein and fat diet and when you do your energy level will grow and your sex life will improve. Do a lot of your carbs come from caffinated soft drinks? If so that's where your energy may be coming from. And your weight.

Commonly Reported
These are some of the most commonly reported benefits in low carb forums, support groups, and informal surveys. (Some have preliminary scientific evidence, but more subjective improvements are harder to study.) The first two are by far the most commonly reported, and these benefits usually happen by the end of the first week, although sometimes it takes another week or two. Results are obviously going to be variable between individuals.

* Increased energy
* Cravings for sweets gone or much less
* Better mental concentration; no “brain fog”
* Improved mood; emotions more even
* ”Compulsive” or “emotional” eating gone
* Improved dental hygiene (less dental plaque; improved gum health)

Benefits of Low Carb Diets - Health Improvements with Low Carb Diets

I don't really drink any softdrinks at all (maybe twice a month). I am going to work towards reducing my carbs and bad fats. I did just cardio and cut soft drinks and most candy and went from 238 to 202...still ate all starchy foods/carbs/etc plus cheese burgers, red meat, french fries, and what not. I just used portion control and worked my ass off.

I've gained weight back but slowly over several months as I've packed on muscle. I've had measured increases in lean muscle across my body and my waist has shrunk from a tight 38 to a loose 36.

This quote by Dave Draper pretty well describes my last workout. :(

<I’ve got an occasional heartbeat and a handful of exercises, from presses to curls. I know a rep from a set and I can count to 20 if I have to.>

I'm still alive... :)

Keep it up dude.:rock

Well done! Keep up the great work!

The world is turning into a crazy place. A friend hired a personal trainer for her 94-year old father. That's crazy.

It beats the **** out of being in a nursing home drooling in your oatmeal.:2wave:

Just a little photo update. This is me at 195. Taken just a couple of days ago. I'm running and lifting regularly still. Total loss of 43lbs from my heaviest at 238. I'm 10lbs away from my "goal" weight.

Can't tell from the pics because you have a shirt on but looks like you have a little more than 10 lbs to lose to really cut down. I'd suggest getting down to around 8-10% body fat before going on a clean bulk.

When I stepped on the scale this morning, I was at 166.

Last year at this time, I was 225.

Oh dude, I don't wanna get to 8-10% bodyfat. I'm not trying to be a ripped type or bodybuilder. I'm just trying to get down to about 15-17%. I'm doing just fine burning it off and building muscle lol. I'm just trying to get healthy, stronger, and faster. 185lbs is my goal.

Why not? You definitely have the drive to do it so why not go for it? You just keep doing what you're already doing, but for a few extra weeks, a few extra weeks to look ripped is a no brainer to me.

185lbs is my goal.

Then what?

I just have no desire to put myself through what it would take diet wise to hit 8% body fat. I know guys who do that at my age and it's not something I'm willing to do. I like to eat. 185 is a healthy weight for me. If I get down below that so be it. I have some strength and speed goals I wanna hit as well. We'll see how that goes but 185 is a good weight for me.

I’m getting ready to go on another eight week 5x5 starting Monday after taking the summer off. Looking forward to it. My weight has dropped by two pound over the summer, now at 207.

What do you mean? You just hit a caloric deficit the same way you're already doing. If you like eating then just throw in some extra cardio to up your maintenance level.

I like eating, too. I'm running a 500kCal deficit and I'm never full. I eat pretty damn good food, too.

Sure when you get down to lower bf% you need to watch other things such as sodium intake but that's not something you'd need to worry about at 8-10% (more around 5%).

I'll be going on 5x5 once I'm done with this cut, sort of looking forward to it. Good luck.

Well I don't plan on stopping my lifestyle. 185 is a number on a scale and a reasonable goal for me to hit. As far as then what, I'll just have to see. Maybe some day I will hit 8% body fat, I just don't know...at the rate I'm going it will be a couple of years at least it seems. My body fat percentage is not something I'm really tracking that much because it seems to be somewhat inconsistent in terms of readings. I checked into a Bod Pod test but decided the mirror was a better fit for me given my goals. I just feel really healthy and positive right now and thats what I'm after at this point. I set attainable goals and go after them. I honestly don't have a "long term plan" other than to be healthy, get stronger, and faster.
