The house will be voting on it next week. Bottom line: Should we make Washington DC a state? Their population is greater than Wyoming and Vermont.

What is your view?

Your poll options are biased. You have two yes options with identical meaning but different connotations, but only one unconditional no option, with a negative connotation.

I would say. "no' since DC already has too much representation.

How so? The President, Vice President, Senators, Congressmen, etc are NOT residents of the state. We're talking about people who are registered voters, work in D.C, and go to school in DC. Due to lack of statehood, they pay high property taxes. Their congresswoman cannot vote in congress.

It would be a democratic state.

No way the republicans will agree to it.

With all due respect, the President said in 2015 that he supports making DC a state. Now he's changed his tune, citing it would create two Democrat Senators. If we're going to give the people of DC the opportunity to pick a Republican and Democratic nominee and vote for President of the United States, then why not give them statehood?

Why is it that DC pays more taxes than Maryland and Virginia, yet their residents get ZERO political say in the house and senate? That just doesn't make sense. It would make more sense for them to join either Maryland or Virginia or get statehood.

If you look at the arguments against statehood, it purely falls under the "We're giving the Dems two Senators". That is what the house is arguing.

Actually many members of both houses of Congress, The Supreme Court, and the President, have residences in DC.
For many they live there most of the year, and only return to their home districts and states, because they have to run for reelection.

Why should they get statehood. What possible reason is there for thinking that DC getting Congressional representation would make the country better?

DC’s potential Congressional representation is the main point both for and against its statehood.

Our U.S Senators and congressional leaders are NOT residents of Washington D.C. They are residents of their communities they represent.

Your poll is worthless, you provided your own biased answers that one has to check off. If it were a simple poll as you said, then then there should have been only three simple boxes, yes, no and other. The responds are then free to explain their answers in their own words if they choose to, their words not yours.

Yes, the term resident, applies to where your official residence is. It does not not limit them from also owning a home in DC.

I have no idea, but he currently resides in the White house, in DC.

Donald Trump is a resident of FLORIDA. He's not a resident of Washington D.C.

That's the point you're missing. The people who actually live in Washington DC are at an economic disadvantage and have no political say on the issues of the country. They should either make DC part of Maryland or Virginia OR give them statehood.

Sure. But, it will be fought, because that's not a republican area. I'm for Puerto Rico too, for that matter.

DC can become a state but then I want all of the federal apparatus moved to Florida.

Everything from the appointment of judges to gerrymandering to the discussion of DC's statehood is biased on a Republican............never if it gets so much as one more democratic vote.

Pure partisanship and hate.

Just check the posters here favoring or opposing. Those favoring are giving mostly rational arguments while those opposing.........well, you know who they are already.

Just add it to maryland or virginia. Problem solved.

DC deserves to be a state, or at least in a state. It is screamingly obvious that they are deprived of proper representation and sovereignty. As a result, they end up being the playthings of whoever is in charge of Congress.

That's not what this nation is about.

No, please go on. What are those who oppose it?

Since DC is a city it makes sense to make that city part of one of the surrounding states. Making it a separate state makes about as much sense as making CHOP our 51st state.

DC is a Federal District, not a state. It is administered by congress. Statehood is not achievable and the democrats throw it out there all the time for the non readers to chew on.

DC is not a state currently. If people live and work in DC, they should have been representative in our nation. It's basically taxation without representation.

No, nor should any US citizen be considered to hold a primary residency in DC for the purposes of national elections, or Congressional representation. All citizens need to have an on record state of residency in one and only one state. Naturally, they can hold a secondary residency in DC and be eligible for voting in city elections.

Maryland and Virginia both ceded land to form Washington DC, now you want them to take it back. I would not make them a state but I would try to pass something that would give them the special right to vote, but none of the other things required to be a state.
