The Dreamers are traditionally bi-partisanly popular. Bringing them up could serve to remind people of the complexities around mass deportations, and how maybe that isn't really the way to go. Trump's cruelty is an appeal to, shall we say, the prurient interests of MAGA, but it isn't very popular. Harping on the Dreamers brings some humanity to the discussion.

Why?

In one sense you can think of the kids as being innocent victims, but in another sense they're benefiting from illegal and opportunist acts of their parents. My view is we need to quit encouraging illegals to circumvent US immigration laws.

Should we punish the sons for the sins of the fathers?

You take away their citizenship which they rightly do not deserve? That's not punishment... that's justice.

Perhaps some immigration reform is in order.

I've been hearing these same shitty comments since my teens.

America has always benefited from the cheap labor illegals provide thus there is no real effort to stop it.

It's all a big ****ing charade.

Many Americans I know hear and accent and think 'illegal immigrant'.

I've always wondered why the U of A doesn't issue work visas. Without people with Latino accepts, those melons ain't getting picked.

So....

Put their parents in jail with them.

They should do everything to engender a truthful counter narrative surrounding immigration that portrays the vast majority of immigrants as simply working class people trying to make a better life for themselves while strengthening the legal immigration process to make it easier.

As opposed to years and years of GOP lies of kneecapping the legal immigration system while depicting immigrants in general as either criminal thugs or a bunch of white-replacers.

I will say for about the thousandth time that a just world would have zero immigration restrictions.

Oh yeah, immigration reform is way overdue, but it's not going to happen now.

I'm thinking of it as a political response. To remind Americans in the face of Trump's cruelty that there are humane options. Dreamers has generally been a positive issue for Dems.

My first reaction was to challenge that.

At each writing however I saw my own bullshit.

A just world wouldn't need immigration.

Why are ‘dreamers’ (those arriving as minors between 6/15/2007 and 6/15/2012) any more human than other illegal aliens (‘undocumented’ immigrants)?

Their coming here not of their own will seems to have generated sympathy for them.

You know, markets seem to regulate immigration. When the economy slumps, people leave; when it thrives, people show up.

Who's economy?

Canada has a waiting list no matter the economy of the day. Some people simply need to get out to stay alive. We may have a thriving economy but what's the situation in the country they are abandoning.

What drives me crazy is if today's laws were in effect in 1500's none of you would be here. American would be red...and I don't mean politically

Of course its only Liberals who violate the immigration laws.

Big big land owners with 22 square miles to pick would NEVER think of hiring an illegal.

Where the **** do you think they get work? From liberals?

Jesus, your country is ****ed up

A hundred years or so from now we will look back on mass deportations with loathing and wonder just how ****ed up we are for giving our own tax dollars to the government in order to oppress other poors, just like we look back on slavery and Jim Crow with disgust.

And the reality is that open borders isn't even that novel of a concept. We have open borders between the 50 states, and I challenge one person to claim their state would be better off if it couldn't trade and travel freely with the states neighboring it. The Europeans realized borders were not only unjust but economically stupid and that is why they have the Schengen zone.

Hell, I can't speak for Canada but the American Republic had open borders for the first 100 years after its founding until the first (notably racist) immigration restrictions were introduced in the late 1880s.

All borders do is get people killed - often the most vulnerable and marginalized people (rich people have way more options to cross borders "legally"). They are inherently anti freedom, anti equality, and anti working class.
