I agree.
If taxpayers paid for it, why should an individual be able to patent it? We're taxpayers. We paid for it, so it's ours.
I agree. But this sort of thing doesn't just happen in public TV. Netscape/Mozilla entirely public funded code written by and for the NCSA.
You mean to say that they copyrighted it even though it was paid for by public funds? That sounds like it ought to be illegal to me.
Clark and Andreessen did. Started Netscape and had the largest IPO the tech sector f the time had ever seen.
No. The BBC is publicly funded, but their copyrighted productions are sold around the world which defrays the cost to the public. They are freely available in the UK.

One important factor: public television is only partially tax payer funded. The rest comes from donations from a combination of sources; business donations, dationations from private citizens, grants from charitable foundations.
Another factor is the model by which some programming is acquired. Many PBS shows are not produced by PBS. Instead they are produced by private entities. PBS pays for a lisence to carry them but the producer maintains the rights. Should books that are available in the taxpayer funded public library be public domain since the taxpayers paid for the books?

what is the bottom line here
do you think people are getting rich off of PBS shows?
If we are paying for it then I think the public should have free access to those programs through torrents and other file sharing sites.what would you like to see happen? and why?
