Should Israel be required to sign the NPT? [W:348]

Should Israel be required to sign the NPT

No need. Israel will not use their nukes unless pressed to the wall, nor will they help our enemies obtain nukes, so it isn't a real concern.

Here's something of interest from Ariel Sharon

Because nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands scares pretty much every country on the planet. Even countries without them don't want more nuclear weapons floating around.

Who on this planet could enforce that requirement?

Not going to happen, not today, not tomorrow, not any time soon.

Wait and see.

who on the planet? There are lots of trouble makers around.

I'm thinking the question/poll is more likely soliciting debate over hypocritical nuclear policy than whether or not anybody can or will deny Israel there's.

Your statement runs contrary to the alleged secret agreement that the U.S. has with Israel to shield Israel's nuclear program. Look everyone knows that the U.S. does not honest broker when it comes to Israel. It's hypocrisy pure and simple.

Where is the hypocrisy there? The US has not been ambiguous in its commitment to Israel.

But it does require that they exterminate the Amalekites

In an ideal world maybe this could happen, but in today's real world it's not going to happen.

No one can force a nuclear-armed Israel to sign the NPT just as no one can force a nuclear-armed Russia to leave Ukraine alone.

That's just the reality of things.

And a great argument for global disarmament since nuclear power can lead to unstoppable belligerence.

If nothing else it would stop U.S. hypocrisy on the issue.

Nothing will stop U.S. hypocrisy on this or any other issue when it's in the USA's best interest.

Check with the U.S. government, I'm sure that it will give you a full explanation.

I agree 100%. But unfortunately that Nirvana isn't going to happen anytime soon.

So far, there are only four nations that entirely did away with nuclear weapons and signed the NPT;

  • South Africa voluntarily disassembled its nuclear weapons (?) and signed the NPT.
  • Belarus voluntarily transferred its nuclear weapons (81) to Russia and signed the NPT.
  • Kazakhstan voluntarily transferred its nuclear weapons (1,400) to Russia and signed the NPT.
  • Ukraine voluntarily transferred its nuclear weapons (5,000) to Russia and signed the NPT.

It appears you think the NPT is useless. Do you think nuclear proliferation is practical? Should it be something that the human race accepts? If so, what will be the consequences in terms of the ability of the human race to survive?
If by "useless" you mean that they're only worth the paper they're written on, and that people/countries are sometimes prone to break agreements, then yes.

The human species is not practical, btw. It's a nice thought, but it ain't so.

Don't disagree at all. But per my previous comment, if I'm the leader of a country my primary responsibility is to my people. If I'm Belgium I can probably get away with signing such a treaty and we'll be fine. If I'm Ukraine all bets are off, given Russia's history and mindset.

U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and towards Israel has not and does not until this very day make any damn sense with regards to U.S. interests.

It never did and that's been going on since the day that the state of Israel came into existence.

I wonder who we have to thank for that?

Both political parties have for the most part supported Israel ... presidents and legislators alike.

You have provided a clear explanation for the USA's position on Israel's nukes.

Good post.
