Should college professors be fired for expressing their views outside the classroom?

NO. BUT, they should be held accountable for participating in anything that infringes on the rights of students who are there simply to get an education and not involved in the protests.

Members of the TX Legislature seem to think so.

That really depends on the opinion, and how it is expressed.

For example, a college might not want to employ a professor who repeatedly said that gay people were abominations and should be killed.

Or it could be less justified, and they get a bunch of money from a company that the professor publicly trashes.

So does every corporation in America.
Corporations aren't government. Corporations can make and enforce their own employment regulations, so long as they don't violate state and Federal laws.

State-supported schools, however, are government entities. Hence, free speech attaches - or it should, generally speaking.

It seems like conservatives are trying to take advantage of this situation to have college presidents they don't like removed so that they can be replaced with a more conservative option.
And, funny, isn't it, that the college officials are....female.

Misogyny is alive and well within the GOP.

He who takes the King’s coin becomes the King’s man. The government has just as much latitude to decide what it will or will not allow as an employer as any corporation.

He declined to to express his own view.

A small group of professors want the president to resign. A politician wants them to resign instead. it looks like everybody is free speeching just fine.

To complete the circle lets have everyone resign! I would be an awesome President/professor. Just saying. Grades, what grades?

No, that's not how free speech works. Employees are not prohibited from saying anything but talkspeak.

Not exactly. He is seems to be threatening to fire them for expressing their views. "The Texas House is putting all state-funded university professors on notice: return to the original purpose of higher education or find another state to employ you."

Free speech doesn’t mean consequence free speech. Companies do it and the government has done it in its capacity as an employer since its founding.

Bloviating. he has no power.

To the initial question though, thats actually a good one. What if the professor is spewing racist NeoNazi crap? What if the professor is pro Isil or Pro-NAMBLA? Even worse, what if the professor avows the utter insanity that cats are superior to dogs?
