Seven Charts Showing How Canada/Mexico Tariffs Would Harm the US Auto Industry (and American Car Buyers)

Americans will now pay $3,000 more for a new car.
What on earth makes you think Americans will buy a car that costs $3,000 more instead of buying other comparable cars that don't cost $3,000 more?

I mean, are those cars affected by the tariff the ONLY cars available to US consumers? I don't think so.

The reality is this: People won't buy those cars. Canada and Mexico won't be able to sell those cars. Both countries lose money. American buyers will still buy cars...but they won't be buying those more expensive cars.

Tell me again...who, exactly, will be hurt by these tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

Understand the issue fail.

It's the parts.

I'm responding to the very first sentence in your OP: "Americans will now pay $3,000 more for a new car."

Yes, due to the increased costs of Mexican and Canadian components.
That doesn't negate my claim that Americans will buy cars that do not cost $3,000 more.

Better import from Japan then.

That is an alternative.

But the point you are trying hard to ignore is that it won't be Americans who suffer...we have alternatives...it'll be Canada and Mexico.

We have alternatives too.

Who else is going to buy the cars and parts you make?
US automakers will shift from buying parts from Canada and they'll shift their manufactuing back to the US (out of Canada).

It won't take long for them to being able to sell their cars WITHOUT that added $3,000 cost.

BTW this is boring.

You are dismissed.
Okay.

So it goes when your argument gets torn to shreds.

Bye.

Yup. The post below screams "nice country you got there...be a shame if something happened to it".

Want to see him howl? Shut off the oil flowing from Canada to American Refineries. Gasoline would go up by a buck or maybe even two a gallon. Then he would howl about Canada demanding they turn the oil on.

How about this. Get rid of all the subsidies and tax credits for Tesla and save the taxpayer a lot more money than your imaginary Canada nonsense.

That won't do anything to stop drugs coming from Canada, stop illegal aliens from coming from Canada or reduce our trade deficit with Canada.

You should probably blame the idiot who negotiated the USMCA.

???

Why? Are you saying the USMCA is responible for Canada supplying drugs and illegal aliens to the US? Or do you think it's responsible for the US having a trade deficit with Canada?

You know...you should be clear when you talk to me...I mean, if you want me to know what you are talking about. Just saying...

btw, what does the USMCA have to do with Tesla?

You think trump will walk back his tariffs?
Even if he did, which I think he will, he’s caused irreparable damage to our credibility and foreign relations.

Neither will tariffs. You know why? Because that’s not an actual ‘problem’ in the grand scheme of things. It’s just an excuse that you gobbled whole.

?????????????? Across the board...all new cars up 3K. Used cars have a shelf life, ok?

What on earth makes you think Americans will buy a car that costs $3,000 more instead of buying other comparable cars that don't cost $3,000 more?
Because they may not like the other car brands for various reasons. (Reliability, warranty, drive train options, engine options, etc)
Wonder if you considered buying a Yugo back in the 80's till 2008? They were one of the least expensive cars around.
I mean, are those cars affected by the tariff the ONLY cars available to US consumers? I don't think so.
Of course there are alternatives. For an example, I would not consider a mini cooper or Fiat even if they were not impacted by the tariffs. Don't like the way they ride.

You do realize that many Americans work for car companies that will be impacted. Your view of the American buyer is not reality. The tariffs are going to impact workers in the US

Tell me again...who, exactly, will be hurt by these tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
Some American workers in the auto industry. From manufacturing, sales, and maintenance.

Time will tell but imo Trump is wrong in how is going about wanting to reduce the illegal entry into the US and the number of illegal drugs entering the US.
The American people are about to get screwed. Even if it is short term.
