The U.S. Senate yesterday approved spending $4.6 billion to settle two lawsuits: one by black farmers who alleged racial discrimination by government lenders and the other by 300,000 American Indians who said they had been cheated out of land royalties dating to 1887.
Passage of the measure, by voice vote, unblocks a legislative logjam that has thwarted payouts, negotiated by the Obama administration, of $1.15 billion to the black farmers and $3.4 billion to the American Indians.
“We are one step closer to ensuring that the black farmers and Native Americans in these suits are fully compensated for past failures of judgment by the government,” U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, said in a statement after the Senate vote. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, said he hopes to seek a vote after Congress returns from a week-long recess on Nov. 29.
President Barack Obama praised the Senate action and urged the House to move forward with the bill “as they did last year.”

it's not reparations though.....Yeah, ok.

If the native americans were ripped off of the royalties owed to them by the government, then they are owed that money are they not. A contract is a contract
There's a reason why there are statutes of limitations.

You are 100% right about that. And of those reasons here was to screw Native Americans.
Uh, what?
Are you saying that the concept of a statute of limitations was developed to screw Native Americans?
that is the way it was used in this case. Quite frankly, I could NOT care less why it was developed.
There's a reason why there are statutes of limitations.
I'm sure that at some point in the last 500 years, one of my ancestors was ****ed over by some government. That does not mean that that government owes me a check.
And they wonder why racial tensions are worse than ever.
I just wish they'd pay all the damn money they think the white man owes and be done with it once and for all. Then NO MORE! Let's get on with life as equals!
Shirley Sherrod (remember her) was mixed up in this black farmer reparations and made out like a bandit.

BTW in case anyone didn't know Shirley Sherrod (remember her) was mixed up in this black farmer reparations and made out like a bandit. Yea, she really needed that money, huh?
They're worse than ever because white people don't like the fact that brown people have positions of power. Period.
If this was a real case then why couldn't the courts handle it?
When Shirley Sherrod Was First Wronged by the USDA - TIME... In a passionate recounting of the events leading up to the settlement, the federal judge who decided it in 1999, Paul Friedman, wrote in his decision that "the USDA and all of the structures it has put in place have been and continue to be fundamentally hostile to the African American farmer."
They're worse than ever because white people don't like the fact that brown people have positions of power. Period. I'm sick of white people whining all the time. You are not worse off because of brown people. You're worse off because rich white people on Wall Street stole your retirmement and devalued your home with unethical investment tools, got a bailout from both parties, and gave themselves Billions in bonuses.
They want you to be angry at brown people because it keeps the poor and middle class at war with themselves while they get richer and richer and richer off of their unscrupulous tactics.
If working people of all races would stop being whiny little bitches about race and fighting with one another, maybe we could get back to an economy that values WORK instead of the ability to craft schemes that make them richer by shuffling **** around.
You worry about this bill, but you don't worry about the fact that a "farmer" from Tennessee runs for office on "smaller government" but has collected $20 million in government farm subsidies over the past decade? Imagine how many others like him are making a killing off your tax dollars. But that doesn't bother us because their white? Is that the point?
Problem is, that when you are talking about it in terms of the AA community speaks of it such as BLT churches in the inner cities, you get this:
Pay particular attention to the clip at 2:05 on.....

So explain the trick of how then did Obama get elected if so many white people hate him because of his color? What a load of crap....
j-mac
People hated the idiocy of the Republican party under GWB more
Ok, then the midterm blood bath must in turn mean that they also hate demo idiocy even more than that to put repubs back in charge of the purse, right?
j-mac
you beat me to it, kudos
ms sherrod's and her husband's communal farm, which they called new communities, won 12.8 million from ag, and the put out couple were awarded an additional 330,000 for mental anguish alone
Resignation of Shirley Sherrod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
remember, ms sherrod was forced to pull over on the side of the freeway and quit NOW cuz the white house, according to ms sherrod, was afraid she would appear that day on BECK
a shameful display
No
They hate the current economic conditions and are blaming the current party in power for it
So you think that everyone should be able to bring any claims at any point, no matter how long ago the incident was?

OK.... Who's going to be the first to slam me for using Breitbart as a source? At least he's a lot more believable than Media Matters.
