Background and context:
NJ school where teen Adriana Kuch was bullied has disturbing past, critics say (link), see also Four students charged in vicious beating of Adriana Kuch before 14-year-old’s suicide (link)
I am 65, and went to school long before anti-bullying efforts became fashionable. When I was in school, bullying, then called scapegoating or hazing was rife, both in school and in summer camps. Typically, little to nothing was done, until ironically the intended victim fought back. Then it was a problem, since it was a fight rather than a one-way victimization.

Now, being against bullying is fashionable. There are "anti-bullying" programs. I question whether they "walk the walk" as well as "talk the talk" since horrible stories tend to pop up routinely.

That was not bullying. It was a outright violent assault that began with a bashing in the face with a bottle............. and followed up with a severe pummeling.

There might have been bullying before the beatdown........... but teachers stood by and let it go on.

Liberals are full of shit when it comes to bullying & protecting kids.

Newport News Virginia is their latest sorry example for safe environments for students.

I had a bully in middle school, older kid failed a grade or two, who would pick on me for playing trombone. After telling him to go **** himself one day he decided to ride my bus home to fight me after schools. Dwayne underestimated my willingness to swing the trombone case as he charged me. Long story short he had stitches and a broken black eye for a long time but never picked on me again.

My story is similar.

Whenever I stood up for myself, I would get disciplined. Once disciplined they double down knowing they can provoke you. I wish I could say I learned to fight but I lost every one of them.

Now, you even look the wrong way to some weirdo and you are the one "bullying".

I like the way some native Indians dealt with teen angst. They would leave the pair in the wilderness without food and let them 'work it out'. They either worked together of died alone. In Africa I have learned that two disputing parties are made to stand in the middle of a river until they lose their anger. Both cultures teach that holding a grudge is like burning yourself with hot coals.

That (lame?) example deals with two people. If its 4 against 1 then placing the 5 in the woods together would likely have a far different result.

I seem to remember schools en masse enacting "zero tolerance" rules following the Columbine massacre to crack down on bullying.

Apparently that's no longer a priority.

That was quite obviously window dressing.

Trouble with "zero tolerance" rules is that they deprive administrators of the element of discretion. There needs to be at least some.
