San Francisco just banned facial-recognition technology[/h]San Francisco (CNN Business)San Francisco, long one of the most tech-friendly and tech-savvy cities in the world, is now the first in the United States to prohibit its government from using facial-recognition technology.

This is an interesting development.

...lol...yeah, I've got no idea who's going to be pissed off at this one...but someone will.

We should have facial recognition cameras. You have no right to walk freely without fear of being seen if you have an arrest warrant or are wanted by the police

Let's ban license plate, fingerprint and DNA recognition technology too.

It seems that they are taking being a sanctuary city to the next level. Next up, decriminalizing crime - no more need for police, courts, jails or prisons.

You sounds like a terrible libertarian. ;)

It doesn't work anyway. It wouldn't even pick up this picture as being Nancy Pelosi.

Or it is meant to prevent the dystopian future in which the government tracks a persons movements to ensure civil obedience. Imagine that ability in the hands of a less than trustworthy government.

Tracking person X from place to place, seeing they had contact with a person the government deems a threat. Arrests person X for enhanced interrogation to see what they were doing and why.

Certainly facial recognition could be very useful in keeping society safe, but it can very easily be turned to a means of government oppression

It will make the crime statistics fall, if all crime is decriminalized!

It works better with the more data points fed into the system.

In the US based systems it works best with european faces, and quite a bit worse with African faces. Chinese systems work best with Asian faces. The machines of both system were fed data that generally had European faces in it, and Chinese in the case of Chinese systems

Replace "facial " with fingerprint, license plate, cellphone GPS or DNA recognition technology and consider if it is any less prone to oppression/abuse. You fight oppression/abuse by getting rid of the oppressors/abusers not by limiting their proper and lawful use of technology.

If a government possesses a tool.which can be abused it will be abused. Maybe not by those who created it, with good intentions, but certainly, eventually, by someone with something to gain by it. Money, power, etc.

I'm sure Facebook would love it. Then they would have data on your movements, what you look at, what you don't. Better psychometric profiles for their customers.

Yep, it has been proven to work well in SF. They officially have very few crime problems with thousands of doped up homeless folks - just ask them for the statistics.

They can not track fingerprints or DNA when you are walking down the street, you can leave your cell phone at home or pick up a burner phone using cash. In large cities where CCTV's are very common facial recognition could be used to track a person from the time they left their home, throughout the day until they get back behind their door. As for getting rid of oppressors/abusers, it becomes far more difficult if they know your every move and everyone you meet

Wow... The 'less government' and 'get out of our lives' Conservatives and so called 'Libertarians' are FOR facial recognition cameras in the streets so the government can track your every move?

Politics has become to new religion in this country. Of all the things cons have flipped on recently to defend and excuse the modern Republican Party, THIS is a hypocrisy biggie..

Not a valid comparison on finger prints and DNA. Those are not collected while one is out in public and unaware.

No, you prevent oppressors from becoming by not giving them the power.

Nonsense, they may be collected at (or near) "crime scenes" and require no warrant.

Absolutely, you may leave such "trace" evidence wherever you go.
You are missing the point. Fact remains that neither fingerprint or DNA can be or is collected from the public for the purpose of searching for possible wrongdoing.
