For a supposedly guilty party, the Russians certainly do keep re-raising the Salisbury issue, which seems a little strange.


This is a very long and thorough recap of events, and asks 57 un-answered questions. Strangely enough, a quantum more thorough than anything released by the UK, most of which has been conducted through 'informed leaks' to friendly media newspapers.

So let's just ignore the killing of a Russian in the UK whose death greatly benefitted Russia and ignore the murder weapon was developed by Russia and held exclusively by Russia all because Russia said it didn't do it.

I keep hearing that, but until the attack I had never heard of this guy or read his name on any list of system critics. Plus what benefits exactly? More sanctions? Not exactly a benefit. In fact the only ones that it has benefited is Ukraine and the neo con right in the UK and US.

Fact is, if this was the Russians, it was poorly planed and executed and that aint the usual Russian MO.

One of the men who invented it and can replicate it lives in the UK. And it was not held exclusively by Russia... it was the Soviet Union, and that included places like Ukraine. Why is it that people forget to mention these bits.

This case has been miss-handled by the Brits and exploited by the Americans and Ukrainians. I am not trying to defend Putin but there is plenty of actual real provable attack methods against Putin than grasping at straws in this case. Way too much "guilt by association" and pretty much nothing else and the evidence that has been presented is about as reliable as the WMD evidence the US presented to the UN. It does not take years to look through CC TV in a small British town and then point out 2 or maybe 3 possible Russian agents.

I doubt many people had heard of Georgi Markov until his assassination. Skripal's line of work was one that by definition kept him away from the notice of the average citizen.

The benefit is obvious. It is the same benefit any organized crime entity gets when they murder or attempt to murder in a gruesome and painful way someone who betrays them. It sends a message to other potential 'traitors to the motherland.'

The GRU and the KGB before them have always been clumsy when it comes to clandestine activity. They care more about the end results than about hiding the actor. This serves to give the Russian Intelligence community an aura of ruthlessness and relentlessness when it comes to dealing with traitors. There is usually little doubt as to who is responsible, and this chemical weapons strike on UK soil with civilian casualties is no different.

So your argument boils down to A) Putin always lets you know his targets before he kills them, and B) Russian agents would never make a mistake, so anything that looks very heavily like Russia did this and matches their MO should be rejected if we even hear about it.

Russia does stuff like this ALL THE TIME. It's highly likely they did this, but even if they didn't, they do things just like it regularly and deserve every bit of criticism, sanctions and anything else that gets thrown their way.

And even if by some slim chance they didn't do this, Putin would want active Russian spies to suspect that he was behind it anyway. He doesn't want proof, but he wants strong suspicion. That way he can deny with a wink in order to argue against sanctions, but he also gets to send the message that disloyalty is deadly. Which he did. No matter how you look at it, Putin benefits from this. It makes no political sense to suspect any other actor would attempt to assassinate a Russian defector.
 
If Russia had wanted Skripal dead, he would be.

Nobody would have dreamt up such a stupid, grand-standing method just before the World Cup and an election in Russia - with two stooges from Russia appearing on numerous CCTV cameras, flying directly from Moscow to London and back, leaving a trail of poison behind them, and delivering it via a door handle.

Really? Seriously?

The UK has presented no evidence, simply phrases like 'highly likely', and generally left a trail of unanswered questions behind its theatre.


PS - conveniently it seems that samples of Novichok were held in the Porton Down lab just a few miles from Salisbury.

And the guy who worked there and invented the stuff lives in the UK.. who also have labs that could easily have produced it.
