To the surprise of no one Europe is royally screwed. What did people think was going to happen once the bear was poked? Maybe Biden should travel to Russia and fist bump Putin otherwise it is going to be a very cold winter in many parts of Europe;

LONDON (Reuters) -"Russia's Gazprom has declared force majeure on gas supplies to Europe to at least one major customer, according to a letter from Gazprom that will add to European fears of fuel shortages.

Dated July 14 and seen by Reuters on Monday, the legal force of the letter is to shield Gazprom from compensation payments for disrupted supplies, but risks escalating tensions between Russia and the West over the invasion of Ukraine that Moscow calls a "special military operation".

The letter said Gazprom, which has a monopoly on Russian gas exports by pipeline, could not fulfil its supply obligations because of "extraordinary" circumstances."

No one is poking the bear. The bear is mauling people and everyone is trying to get it to stop doing that.

Why mention Biden?

No one is poking the bear. The bear is mauling people and everyone is trying to get it to stop doing that.

The bear was cornered, it had no choice but to lash out to get some breathing space

Lebensraum?

Nope. More like Nato's Operation Allied Force against Serbia in 1999 to pry loose Kosovo from Serbia. Russia is playing it from same playbook.

Typically, force majeure is limited to acts beyond the control of either party to a contract. As the Russian state is the majority stakeholder of Gazprom, it's hard to see how their invasion of Ukraine was beyond their own control.

So true. It's kind of like the devil made me do it isn't it? In the same line of thought I believe it was the devil today decided it's time for the EU to pay the piper:

  • "Russia’s Gazprom said on Monday it was halting another turbine in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany.
  • It added that the flow of gas, already at just 40% of capacity, would fall by another half from Wednesday.
  • The European Union has accused Russia of resorting to energy blackmail, while the Kremlin says the gas disruption has been caused by maintenance issues and the effect of Western sanctions."
Maybe, and this is just a guess, the following had a little something to do with the above actions;

"The European Union has announced plans to purchase weapons for Ukraine, close its entire airspace to Russian aircraft, and ban two Kremlin-backed media outlets throughout the 27-nation bloc in an effort to rid “toxic and harmful disinformation in Europe,”"

If the EU thinks that complaining about Russian blackmail is going to help them perhaps they should have considered the consequences of their actions before the fighting started. If they did, and this is exactly what they expected would happen, I wish them the best. However, if there are a few members of the EU that are now on the proverbial fence and thinking about wold be best for their country it would not surprise me one bit.

Let's hope Europe has a mild winter.

That's a very stupid comparison, seeing that NATO had no intention of annexing Kosova while Russia shows to have every intention of doing just that to Ukraine.
