RT said:
The unmanned aerial vehicles produced by Russian companies are too poor in quality to be accepted by the Russian Air Force.

The criticism follows the Defense Ministry’s decision to purchase a number of UAVs from Israel. Officials said the drones and principles of their use will be studied by Russian specialists.

Russian producers are lagging behind leading competitors in the US, United Kingdom and Israel, military officials admitted. In February this year, the Defense Ministry announced an investment program to stimulate UAV industry development.

Good news for the military axis US/UK/Israel.

Israel probably has the largest and most advanced UAV inventory in the world. Only the US drone fleet approaches this capability.

It appears they are. Russia is purchasing them to use and study.

The US production is all spoken for by the US military. The Israelis have production that is not spoken for. Therefore go with the Israeli versions. Then reverse engineer it and see what you can make domestically. This is pretty much the Chinese approach and the Russians have been doing similar for the past 100 years or so.

You mean to reverse engineer them and then they will tell the world to marvel at the new unmanned vehicle that they themselves came up with even though it is nearly an exact copy of the American/Israelie one?

I don't think the Russian Air Force or any Air Force should use unmanned vehicles they are a waste.

During 2009, Israel introduced three new drone models into its fleet. Russia will only be able to purchase generic drones at least 2-3 generations removed from IAF drones currently in service. Even so, these older generic model drones will be significantly more advanced than current Russian technology.

Ridiculous. Russia has always made their own stuff, America has often copied their concepts. Tanks, Space, military tech, Soviet was always before the US, until recent times when the US took over and soviet collapsed.

Now Russia is also making their own stuff, and they reverse engineer, while China puts massive effort into reverse engineering and make their own versions from it. And they dont reverse engineer Russian aircraft carriers only, they reverse engineer anything they come over, and are not hindered by patens and copyrights and those kind of things, which is one of the resons China will become technologially superior to all other nations within short.

Why do you write American/Israeli one when its an Israeli one?

Ground EMP, space EMP, sattelite wars and such will certainly be the weapons to counter unmanned technology, and high tech soldiers and equipment.
In such a scenario the US stand to loose the most, the Chinese know this, and the Russians know this.

On the contrary, Israeli drones have the capability to pre-shape a battlefield, engage in direct offensive operations and close-air-support, and contribute significantly to total battlefield management. They can also track and lock-in over 100 different targets simultaneously for IAF jet fighters.

Is drones a major part of Israeli strategy?
Do you have any info about EMP programs in the middle east(/enemies of Israel/US)?

Not to mention the intelligence capability.

Indeed. My IAF military service was spent working with drones from both ends.. flight crew WSO and embedded CAS officer.

Please.....
What?... Like Bezbol?....
I'm glad we didn't copy Chernobyl.....;)
The Russians copied nearly every idea....
Name three inventions that can claim that the Russians can claim exclusively....
Even their space program was started by captured Germans.....;)

You do realise that since the end of WW2 that US military hardware has been more advanced than the russian equivilant dont you. Seems like it wouldnt be that way if what you said was true.

Despite claims by some the world leader in UAV technology is the United States, Europe and even Israel come in a distant second.

Note the general shape of the Russian unit, and is close resemblance to U.S. models. It's no surprise that they copy as much and as often as they can. It's a cost and time saving method they have implemented successfully for many, many years. However they often build things like very fast fighter planes that can out run any of ours but they require an engine replacement after any maximum effort because of poor quality materials and often workmanship.

I quick review of the history of their sub fleet points this out dramatically.

Their Soyuz Spacecraft is an exception even though it has remained little changed since it's inception in the 1960s.

UAVs are nice to have and will have a growing roll to play in war and in civilian spying and surveillance applications they will never have the ability to make on the spot judgment calls utilizing all of the information that can be gathered by a pilot who can see more than any camera from miles away.

Anyone else laughing at this turn of events?

Russia, who sold billions of dollars (or trillions of rubles) to Arab nations in their attempts to make the Sea the Eastern border of Israel is now buying Israeli arms likely to help them in their fight against Islamic insurgents? :rofl

And people say the universe has no sense of humor.

The problem is that the US screwed around in the beginning, about 30 years ago, with the technology and was slow in integrating it into their doctrine until the 1990's. The Israelis moved forward with purpose (out of necessity) and integrated it quickly into their doctrine. But that's always the case with Israel, except for the development of very costly aircraft. Then they buy from the US and modify later.

As if it wasnt the same story in the US. Haha.

Americans were desperate in the spacerace. They were so desperate they copied the Soviet CONCEPTs. All through the arms race, America copied Soviet things and Soviet American things.

If you see it any other way, you are certainly blindly biased in favour of America.

UAV isnt really that advanced a concept and technology anyways. The logistics and support technology behind it is far more advanced.

Pray tell what is an 'American-Soviet thing"?......
& leave the Lee Harvey Oswald & the Rosenburgs out of it, those are another subject....;)
The U.S. did fall behind in the space race...
...But not for long.....;)
Iwould not say I am blindly biased in favor of America....
My eyes are wide open....:)

How could you, a mere American who is typified by your blindness to everything even within his own country, hope to compare to the knowledge that Mr. Zeebra has acquired through his multiple vicarious objective studies of America through our own news media, foreign media, and his own objective personal research! IT is clear that this Mr. Zeebra is a master of all things American and Politics and should be heralded and respected as such! HUZZAH!
