Rooting interests in the Oylmpics

Is it wrong for Americans to openly root against the USA in the Olympics?

Are you going to openly root for American teams with men who have transitioned into women and are competing?

Do you know any transsexual American athletes in the Olympics? Nobody can root either for or against people who are not on Team USA.

Besides, only a bigot who hates America can root against those people because of their sexual identities. The whole premise of your thread is just that - wanting to root against Americans for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the Olympics.

I lost interest in the Olympics when the US began to send professional athletes to the games.

No, that does not make politicizing the Olympics an acceptable thing. It just means they did it.

The current Olympiad is only political because millions of people around the world were taught lies about masks, social distancing, and COVID-19 vaccines, so they refused to protect themselves. It was not the IOC's fault that they are all truth deniers.
I'm not blaming anyone for anything in this thread. I want to know if people feel its appropriate to root against America and why or why not.

Maybe you believe the country is systemically racist and therefore we should be condemned on the world stage.

Maybe you think the athletes are a bunch of woke twits who should be shunned and denied the opportunity to use the platform to spread their rhetoric.

There's many reasons to be for or against rooting for the USA in the Olympics.

While I don't understand actively rooting against your own home nation I do understand people cheering on someone they like from somewhere else.
Usain Bolt for example is massively popular in the UK and he visits here quite often.
The BBC interviewed him loads and was always well watched as he seems like a nice guy and there was no problem with rooting for him.
What if you don't like what you country is representing?

I dont think it's wrong, especially with team sports like soccer.

Most sports, I could care less about, and will root for my country. But some sports, I find myself rooting for countries other than the US, based on who is playing.

Is this a thing? Are there that many people in the US rooting against US Olympic athletes?
I don't know if its a thing. I am curious how people would react to the idea so I posed it as a question. It's really just an intellectual exercise.

Otherwise, she always rooted for American athletes.

She also did not want a figure skater who went public about his decision to wear real fur during his free routine to win. Luckily we had another figure skater in the men's solo event.

Those were the only two times she did not root for American athletes.
Your mom can't be happy with the curling medals, she needs hockey too???

That's as bad as the Jamaicans wanting a medal for bobsledding.

I think that the Olympic viewership is mosty liberals. They like that anti American stuff.Kneeling for the national anthem.Turning their back to the flag.Me as a conservative I'm only going to watch the transgender weightlifter.

Forgive me, the nature of the OP question had me thinking there was some political angle to all this.

What you are describing is something different and not that big of a deal in my humble opinion.
Your not wrong there is a political angle to it. That is why I broke the poll answers up into political groups.

Any answer is subjective and thus irrelevant to anyone else who doesn't agree with it because they will still be of their own subjective opinion.
It's an open discussion. I made it so you can change your answers on the poll if someone persuades someone to feel differently. Not that anyone ever changes their mind here at DP, but there's a first time for everything. Lol

I know very little about who is competing. I was throwing out an example.

That's interesting. Most people were all for that at the time.
We were holding our own at the time. The DDR was the biggest rival, iirc. Lake Placid ice hockey 1980, in the winter games was the pinnacle, imo.

I'm sure there are some good Cinderella stories that may conflict with interests of the US

Imagine if the transgender wins and people booed her in protest of her being allowed to compete. Then we would be discussing if fans have as much of a right to use the platform to voice their opinions as the athletes do.

I am old enough to remember the miracle on ice and it was an amazing moment.

I will root against any of them that disrespect the American flag.

Congratulations! Maybe one day you’ll be good enough to represent our country and use that platform to let us know about it!

Ok, in the context that its socialy acceptable to openly root against the country you are a citizen of.

Why not. you see the women bicycle road race. The Austrian Master Mathematician, amateur, she and 2 other did a brake away. when they were 10 minutes ahead, the 2 others faded and she just kept on going, 43km on her own. The peleton with all the stars caught up to the 2 others and thought now they had it done.
The 30 year old scientist just kept on going, gave everything and one the gold. The stars did not even know she was out there and were fighting against each other.

Well yes I was rooting for the Lady from Austria.
What a great story, the absolute underdog who nobody knew, wins the gold.

Love it.

Yes I naturally rooted for the German Equestrian Dressage Team, a stellar day today. Having been a international Equestrian, those are my sports, Show Jumping, Dressage and what I did, Three Day Eventing. I will root for Bruce Springsteens daughter in Show Jumping. That girl knows how to ride.
