Rift Beta Players: What server/side you on?

1920x1080. Are you running your screen at max rez?

That should have been 1680x1050. This is what happens when I post right after I wake up.

The leveling will be slower with release. Beta's are ALWAYS faster then retail. I will agree getting points every level, and being able to dictate what I got was nice. Same here on the FPS, mine didn't really drop except in very very packed fights.

Yeah, I expected the leveling was faster in the beta. What's the max level in Rift anyway?

Most MMO's have gear for stats/power it will all depend on how MUCH gear mattes. WoW is 90% gear. So far, from wha tI see with Rift, not so much, which is good.

I just don't like that my character's power level is tied to his appearance. Mostly because I'm used to City of Heroes, where 'gear' doesn't change your appearance at all.

Dying is aces man! I love the soul walk feature, and while yes, the corpse walk sucks, there is a nice radius from your corpse you can rez at to avoid aggro. I remember in EQ, if you died, you had to run back to your corpse. ALIVE, and NEKID. Not only that, but sometimes you'd be dead in a place that you couldn't get your corpse. So you'd have to ask a higher level to help you. This meant they would "drag your corpse" but giving them that power also made it possible for them to loot your corpse. I can tell you horror stories about lost gear. Oh and you lost XP and even levels dying.

I know it could have been lots worse. It probably wouldn't have been as bad if I had been on a team either, but I was mainly playing solo.

It's not your "appearance" so much as it is... oh hell I know what you mean, but really it's not that big a deal. Personally I hated that about CoH. At lvl 1 I looked like an awsome badass super heroe... but a few lvl 2 and 3 punks together would whoop my ass. At lvl 40 I looked pretty much the same...

I do a lot fo solo work, try joining the public groups around rifts :)

I saw enough and asked around and then read more about the game too. WoW was greatly improved in the last expansion reagarding leveling. I do NOT like what they did regarding guilds though. They give ALL the power to large guilds and screws the small guys that enjoy being in a smaller guild. Its killing MY guild. Ive had multiple people leave and its very hard getting new members! Im really cheesed man. I wish Rift was as good as WoW is and I will be checking it out in a few months again. But for now its just not as good. Its similar. But after ALL those months I invested into playing WoW its just not worth getting into another game that is similar but inferior.

I don't know, people say this but I kinda liked it. It put focus back on larger and/or harder end game instances. WoW had been disappointing me for some time ever since they nixed the very large raids and started pandering to the casual gamer. If I wanted to casual game, I'd play Halo. But with MMOGs I wanna be serious and put the time and effort into farming, rep, crafting, and raiding. My guild had gone through hardtimes, particularly when WotLK came out. But now we've shed some weight and are getting back into the swing of things. Before my vid card took a dump on me (not literally), I had been leveling some low level toons; but I have to say I think they made the early levels WAY too easy to breeze through. I understand the need to level up to endgame, which is now 85, but once you're in the 30's or so, you should need to hit up a few zones before you can advance to the next set of zones. I don't know, I'm kind of a traditionalist when it comes to these things.

When I look at Rift, I see the potential for large scale raids and great endgame stuff and a lot of necessary interaction and support. I haven't convinced myself to give up WoW at this point, I'll definitely want to see how Rift proper works out. But there's a lot of promise in this game for more strategy and skill; and that's what I like.

Maybe you should consider the Defiant. I've got a few friends (~9 or so thus far) who are committing to the game and we're gonna have a nice, friendly, but focused guild to take care of things like this. It'll be fun. I think we're gonna make a Guardian guild too, but that's gonna be a more "for fun" thing than anything else. Can you have both factions on one server? Well my main will be a Bahmi Necromancer/Warlock and my secondary will be Kelari Shamman (though I haven't decided upon a second soud for it yet). I like having 2 endgame characters fully raised with both crafting/rep grinded out.

I'm committed to the Guardians. I like being the underdogs. I appreciate the offer, if it doesn't work out I'll hit you up.

Eh, just a matter of personal preference.

Underdogs eh? I thought they were more like the good guys. We just had a discussion last night about faction. We essentially related Guardian to Alliance and Defiant to Horde. In our experiences (even though I was die hard Alliance), we found that more kids seemed to play Alliance than Horde, and our decision for Defiant was built on the assumption that there will be less kids playing that faction. Who knows if that's a true statement.

Defiant are the cool bad guys, like alliance. (also, in beta so far defiant have had a huge pop advantage)

Looks like I got my beta invite at last to coincide with this weekends stress test, downloading it now.

I am torn between whether to go defiant or not though, their particular flavor is the one I naturally would gravitate towards, but my "take the path less traveled" side is tugging me towards the guardians, despite this.

Well I'll have to look this up. He had taken Defiant because we thought there was less chance that it would be the faction all the kids played.

Okay, who's gonna actually get this game when it comes out? If a bunch of you are going to I'll get it too.

I pre-ordered it so that I can start early. We're making a guild and such and I know my roommates are doing a power level thing to try to reach end game the quickest. I'm not. I think I'm going to try to enjoy my leveling up experience and get my skills and such maxed out as I go along. Should be fun. But I do certainly hope they tone down by A LOT how quickly you level in this game. I like end game raids as much as the next guy, but I also like the leveling up part of having a toon. You can only level them up once, so I don't want to rush through it. Hadn't had quite the chance to check out the crafting system, but I was doing a little of it and it seems pretty cool. We're gonna have a guild and everything, I'll post what server we're going to when we figure all that out.

We are probably going Defiant, but I'm not 100% sure on that. There is still some discussion going on, we may end up Guardian. Don't know. Regardless, when it gets closer to release and I work this out with my friends, I'll give server/faction/contact information for anyone interested in maybe getting in on the guild.

Somewhere on the rift beta forums (I doubt I can find it again) I read that the level rate was the same as it will be in game.. it does seem rather fast, but then again I do not know what the top level is either.

Hadn't had quite the chance to check out the crafting system, but I was doing a little of it and it seems pretty cool.

I am not sure about the crafting system yet, I am level 20 and stuck now until I can find iron and oak (I think its oak). Not that I will be able to use it until I gain several levels. So far it seems to easy, but I cannot speak about the higher tiers, nor the effort to get them. If it stays this easy then there will be a glut of competent crafters, making for little demand for crafting good and services. On that note.. when practicing to level up crafting there is an option to salvage what you just crafted.. often I get more raw material back salvaging than what I put in, for example I start with 20 copper, craft up 20 rings, and then salvage them all and end up with 24 copper.

I also do not like that there does not seem to be a chance for having critical successes, and as is usually the case, it seems crafted gear is not much better than quest rewards, I craft something and it seems 2 levels later I am in limbo where there is 2 more levels for the next tier, and quest rewards have replaced my crafted weapons (artificing). Jewelery loot rewards seem uncommon so far, so at least I get some use out of that aspect of my chosen profession.

Jury is still out for me, but I think I will be giving the game a pass, too much is solo oriented, and it seems repetitive, all the quests are similar, go run 50 yards over this way, kill such and such monsters, while you are there interact with such and such objects, rinse, repeat. Once in a blue moon try to find a group for the sporadic (very sporadic) quests that are not solo-able, and good luck finding that group if you are not a tank or a healer. There is just not enough impetus for social play, nor grouping IMO.

I'll give the game a try for a bit and see how it comes out in the end. If leveling and crafting are too easy, I'm willing to go back to WoW. I don't want these things to be tedious (like FF XI), but I would like it to be part of the game. Not just some passing thing you do your best to grind through as quickly as possible.

I like the ability to solo, WoW is like that a lot. But I think Rift isn't so much about the solo. You can solo quests a lot, but if you're doing rift sorts of activities, you have to do so in a group. I've found it really easy to run around and join public groups to close rifts and the like; but it's certainly not soloable. Also there were A LOT of rifts and invasions going on in the last beta. While those are cool, I hope that they aren't map clogging like they were in the last beta. I want to be able to run around and herb without running into an invasion every 50 feet.

Well, I spent the weekend trying to talk the wife into buying. We leveled a few toons into the teens and realized something. She likes Defiant, and still fears another mass let down like WAR.

Her fears are:

1. The players are going to ruin the game by demanding you play THIS soul with THIS spec or you are scrub and will kick you from groups and mock you otherwise.

2. The game will fall apart like WAR because there is a design flaw we aren't seeing.

3. Too many people are too in love with WoW to let it go.

Me? I'll go defiant if you guys are, just, a pve server. I don't play "gank a mole".

Pity.

The leveling is boosted for BETA, they've said this. A lot of the "speed" is due to the amount of Rifts and Invasions (major sources of exp btw).

I love the crafting, and did you try playing with planar adds? You can fail those, or end up with better items. Or doing the dailies out Meridian/sanctum to get the full range of the items you can craft? It's actually very deep when you start digging into it.

Solo oriented at the lower levels, as you go up there is more group content, and as you hit into the contested areas it gets more about being with people and getting **** done.

And really, what do you expect from quests? That's MMO Quests 101 right there. I read the text, get the story, and run with it. On guardian, in the college there are some quests that have you go around turning the NPC Professors elemental pets into their ooposites. I.E. a Fire into water, and then you kill it for it's Core. After this you take it to a "sophomore" student and use those cores to protect his "freshman" friend from having from higher level students. Later you meet the two in a swamp, and if you did these quests you get a rather funny escort quest to take the frosh to collect stuff.

It's an MMO, Fantasy Genre. What do you expect?

However, it's more EQ/DAoC to me then WoW. Not a cartoon, love the graphics. Travel is limited, unlike WoW where there are 50 ways to get around. The conflict between Defiant and Guardian isn't just story board... it's PART of the game.

I've forced my roommates into a PvE server. They are both PvP sorts of guys but I told them I won't play on a PvP server. I hate it. I focus a lot on solo quests, farming and crafting. Sometimes I just want to run around and pick herbs, not worry about being ganked. So we will most certainly be on a PvE server. Guild, as I have said, will focus on end game raids; but we're not going to run one of those serious raiding guild things. A few raids a week (and this is end game, so not for a bit), nothing required.

I like the game a lot. It was nice for them to speed up leveling for the Beta, but I'm happy to hear it was a speed up cause for actual release, I want to have to put a lot of time into leveling to end level. It gives it a better sense of achievement, IMO. Though if you're into speed leveling, there will be a few in the guild doing so. I will end up with 2 end game toons, the mage (which will be my main) and a cleric. I went with Necromancer/Warlock/Dominator for my build. I like it, though for raid I may have to switch to a more straight up DPS build. Though I can put out some wicked DoTs now. I don't mind lowering my DPS if I get a lot of controller/status effect sorts of abilities to help the raid out at large.

I've pre-ordered this game, as have my roommates and we're looking at recruiting more of our RL friends to switch from WoW to Rift. Should be fun.

WoW pretty much set the industry standard. New MMOGs will have something in common with it since people like the interface and such. That being said, while it does look a lot like WoW, there are significant differences in the actual worlds which make it potentially a lot more exciting. Of course everything has to play out to see exactly how it's going to work and such. But Rift is shaping up to be a really good game.

I used to do the "speed" thing... oh hell who am I kidding, I hit 85 in less then 3 days.

I'm more interested in just having fun. I do things my way, on my schedule. I've been in HUGE guilds, co-founder of one of the largest in EQ WAY back in the day. Been there, done that; Got the T Shirt.

Now? For Rift...

I don't know what I want to go with class wise. I love my rogue, but she was getting her ass handed to her in Black Garden this morning. Lvl 18, with PVP soul and just... dead and dying. It was terrible.

I finally got a mage to 14 and started tinkering with the souls. I did a Necr/War/Chloro that had some promise. For PVP though, I need AOE. And that is looking like an Ele/Storm combo... We'll see.

I also hope they add meters. Damage, healing, threat, etc. I like meters.

I hope they don't. Meters = "OMG U R BAD! UR DPS IS TEH SUX" /kick

"Open Raid on X! 10k DPS to roll on mount!"

No thank you. I like not having to chase the meter.

Looks like my WOW guild has a presence on Shadefallen
/ Defiant side, I'll be heading there.

Well no one said you'd have to use one. I want one for end game stuffs when I want to tweak builds, spell rotations, gear, etc. It's useful. A lot of people in my guild will want one because of the benefits it has in endgame raiding. That being said, end game raiding is not a requirement to be in our guild, nor would be running a meter. It's just for those of us who are interested in the end game and like to min/max a bit.
