Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader and a survivor of polio, issued a pointed statement in support of the polio vaccine on Friday, hours after The New York Times reported that the lawyer for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has petitioned federal regulators to withdraw the vaccine from the market.

Without naming Mr. Kennedy, Mr. McConnell suggested that the petition could jeopardize his confirmation to be health secretary in the incoming Trump administration.

Yes. I remember. And worth revisiting.

McConnel's blistering came after Trump's acquittal. After he, himself, voted to acquit. ". . . McConnell said he voted to acquit because he did not believe convicting an ex-president was constitutional." (Trump acquitted for second time following historic Senate impeachment trial) A conviction might have kept him out of the 2024 election.

So, the question becomes does his blistering but indirect warning to RFK differ from the barrage with which he blasted Trump?

“They did this because they had been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth — because he was angry he’d lost an election.

“Former President Trump’s actions preceding the riot were a disgraceful dereliction of duty.

“The House accused the former President of, quote, ‘incitement.’ That is a specific term from the criminal law.

After the fact, McConnell placed responsibility without consequences. This time the warning comes in advance. There are more than a few posters here who believe that because Republicans enjoy the slightest of majorities and allegedly tremble at Trump's retribution, Congress is in the bag and will kowtow to Trump's wishes. In a contest between expanding an imperial Presidency and preserving the prerogatives of Congress, I don't see the numbers adding up that way. Especially when some of Trump's appointments are akin to a call for a "Spanky and Our Gang" playhouse production, McConnell just might make RFK's rejection an object lesson. Or, not.

January, when confirmation hearings will likely begin, will ought to clarify the landscape some. Playground or battlefield.

I was 5 years old when the vaccine came out, I remember the sigh of relief from parents and schools, I also remember the Iron lungs. The vaccine was given out free and put in the public domain

In this case, I completely agree with you. It’s one thing to provide convincing evidence that vaccine X is dangerous in some way and then call for its strict regulation or ban. It’s quite another to call for banning vaccine X just in case it could (might?) later be proven dangerous in some way.

For the anti Vax crowd even "convincing evidence" is a subjective term. Just because they convinced themselves after a doomscrolling session doesn't make it evidence.

People really need to be more scientifically aware - even those of us not necessarily good at science. That means understanding that it's been tried and tested and is likely nearer to correct than some kook on the internet.

They need to be more politically aware too. Eggs got more expensive so let's give the screwball convicted felon and his rich screwball friends another shot. Yeah it worked a treat last time...
