Before the Evangelicals took over the GOP in 1980 most Republicans looked like modern day libertarians. The Gawd squad took over the GOP's social program, making abortion and gays there targets.

And the libertarian wing loved that because it provided all the noisy cover they needed to get away with enacting their highly unpopular fiscal policies. And it's still that way today. Their social warrior stupidity is the front page while their tax cuts for the rich slide as quietly as possible to the front of their "to-do" list when elected to the majority.

They didn't take over, they were solicited to milk them for their votes, with efforts like Reagan's partnership with the 'Moral Majority'. One of the most prominent critics was Nixon strategist Kevin Phillips, who left the party over Bush 41 becoming president, who wrote "American Theocracy".

    The establishment of religion policy
  11. We are Americans, not globalists.
