A Florida Republican congresswoman is blaming fearmongering on the left for the reluctance of hospital staff to give her the drugs she needed to end an ectopic pregnancy that threatened her life.
Kat Cammack went to the emergency room in May 2024 where it was estimated she was five weeks into an ectopic pregnancy, there was no heartbeat and her life was at risk. Doctors determined she needed a shot of methotrexate to help expel her pregnancy but since Florida’s six week abortion ban had just taken effect medical staff were worried about losing their licenses or going to jail if they did.
Cammack looked up the state law on her phone to show staff and even attempted to contact the governor’s office. Hours later, doctors eventually agreed to give her the medication.
“There will be some comments like, ‘Well, thank God we have abortion services,’ even though what I went through wasn’t an abortion,” she told the outlet.
Ruptured ectopic pregnancies are part of gods plan.
She should be severely punished along with all the doctors that gave her the drugs.
Glad she’s ok. One might hope this would lead to an epiphany of sorts, but her childish comments suggest otherwise.
She should have received the same level of care she’s trying to force on everyone else.Republican representative’s ectopic pregnancy clashes with Florida abortion law

So, a woman with a life-threatening condition had her treatment delayed for hours due to concerns over the law. This woman managed to get treated, because she's a member of the ruling class and has the ability to get ahold of the governor. How many other women in Florida will not have this privilege?
My personal favorite:
I. Hate. Republicans.
Or yah know. You would think the doctors would know how the law works by now. You don't even need to go to medical school to know that 5 < 6.
Republican men all over the country, including in that state, feel like it's their right to be able to control women and some doctors and medical staff are not going to risk going to prison forever on some technicality. You would think the doctors would know how the law works by now. You don't even need to go to medical school to know that 5 < 6.
That already happens in el salvador:Ruptured ectopic pregnancies are part of gods plan.
She should be severely punished along with all the doctors that gave her the drugs.
What you should be asking is if she pulled up the relevant law that said it could be administered, why was the hospital vacillating?Republican representative’s ectopic pregnancy clashes with Florida abortion law

Is it true ignorance of the law, or is it grandstanding to make some political point? (Since it got air time)
I think laws are laws, written to be interpreted the same way by all, and failing that getting the interpretation by all made by the Supreme court. If a hospital wants to play games with their own incorrect interpretation, they ought to be sued. What do you think the consequences are for having harsh and insane laws, inserting government directly into medical care for theocratic reasons?
I don't think I'd like to see shit happen in a vacuum.Do you think shit happens in a vacuum?
But the entire timing was under the abortion window entirely, correct? As pointed out in the article, ectopic pregnancy is not defined in the law which was very new as well.
See above and revise. So when you have the threat of jail hanging over healthcare providers heads by ill defined laws for stupid, bucktooth, hillybilly, made up, religious reasons, you get bad results.
See above and revise.Perhaps think about that for a minute before you lecture healthcare professionals on what they should or shouldn't be doing.
No one is left alone in a country that doesn't espouse complete personal responsibility.Or you could do the alternative, right and good thing.
Leave women the **** ALONE.
So much for no kings....Party of personal responsibility, refusing to understand the consequences of their own actions.
This coupled with Trump today demanding oil prices not rise is so indicative of how the modern GOP is just a bunch of sabotaging, destructive, tantrum-throwing children.
So much for no kings....
He probably wasn't asking that question because the answer is extremely obvious to anyone who has been paying attention to this issue. You've probably had it explained to you before on this forum, but apparently you need a refresher. What you should be asking is if she pulled up the relevant law that said it could be administered, why was the hospital vacillating?
See, here's the thing about medicine: almost NOTHING is completely certain! That date of conception is an estimate. It has error bars. In practice, it can easily be off by a week. There isn't even certainty when they're assessing the health of a pregnancy,. They are estimating risks. Sometimes they are wrong. There are countless ways that laymen with agendas can question those estimates. But the entire timing was under the abortion window entirely, correct?
It happened last yearYou would think the doctors would know how the law works by now. You don't even need to go to medical school to know that 5 < 6.
But we live in the present, not the past. Try to keep up.Or yah know.
You COULD have just left women alone to begin with.
Which can make ectopic pregnancies more problematic than they have to be.But we live in the present, not the past. Try to keep up.
Clearly they are if they don't know 5 < 6.Republican men all over the country, including in that state, feel like it's their right to be able to control women and some doctors and medical staff are not going to risk going to prison forever on some technicality.
Good point. Probably all cleared up by now.It happened last year
