A federal jury on Tuesday found Illinois State Rep. Derrick Smith guilty of taking a $7,000 bribe from a purported day care operator seeking a state grant. He was also found guilty of attempted extortion. NBC5’s Charlie Wojciechowski reports.

Smith, 50, was charged in February of 2012 of accepting the bribe in exchange for a promise to help steer a state grant grant to a day care center. The day care center turned out to be just part of the FBI's elaborate sting.

Despite his indictment in the spring of 2012, Smith went on to win the March primary. His colleagues in the House voted to expel him from the body in August -- the first time in more than 100 years such action had been taken -- but he was re-installed by voters in the general election three months later. Illinois law prevented House members for expelling him a second time for the same reason.

So Davis and Boobie Rush went to his district to get the vote out for Smith and told them to vote against this guy. Knowing full well they had just kicked him out of the House. He won and was back in.

Which he had this going to with the FBI laying the trap. Now he wants all to know he will fight the good fight. That the FBi set him up.

Well Rutherford won his sexual harassment suit. Now he has another. Still as bad it is.....it doesn't compare to ethics and corruption. Within government.

Pensions again.....we went down that road before. Its how the contracts were written up. That was the Unions and the then Demos. Anything after that Madigan was always in the Way.

Nope - the Unibomber, Jeffery Dahlmer and the Batman shooter were all white but that was not the cause of their criminal tendencies. Most black politicians are not crooks and most white politicians are not great leaders - each has personal responsibility for their actions independent of their race.

Longshoremen and elected officials to the state and federal congress as well as governors of the state are two entirely different worlds. But now he can go after Kirk who has Obama's seat. Which they are saying he could be out by the end of July 2015, this coming year. Then his OL is suppose to go and start serving time.
