Do you remember where you were and exactly what you were doing, on the dreaded date of 9/11??....almost 10 years ago now.

Yea i was in my 4th grade class and a teacher for across the hallway came rushing in to tell our teacher to turn on the radio, so out teacher did, then about 30 minutes later our teacher told us what was going on. I came home that day to find my mom just sitting on the couch with her hands covering her mouth just staring at the TV in shock. My mom then explained to me what happened. Then i went outside to ride my scooter around with some friends and we began to talk about what was going on, and then we just played. Man i was young back then.

I, too, was in 4th grade. I was in church (go figure!) and, at the end of the service, my principal made an announcement that the second tower had been hit. Of course, this meant nothing to me so I went about my merry way. I remember all of the teachers from nearly every class (K-8) huddled in the teacher's lounge, mouths agape, and in bewilderment.

I was in 10th grade, 2nd period Spanish I. There was a kid in my class known for telling stories to get a reaction, so when he said a plane had hit a building in NYC I thought he was joking. My friend got out his PDA to see if there were any news reports and while he was waiting for the results to load our principal came over the announcements to let us know that a plane had, indeed, hit one of the WTC towers. He replaced the daily announcement with a news briefing and then let us know that all TVs on campus would be tuned to the news for the remainder of the day, and that all students wishing to go home would receive an excused absence for the day.

I called my dad and asked if he was okay, if he had heard the news. He picked me up after 2nd period (my 3rd and 4th period were internships, so I wasn't obligated to attend) and we spent the rest of the afternoon making calls to family and friends, inquiring as to whether they had loved ones involved. By this time the plane had crashed into the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania and the WH had already issued one statement.

My stepmom and I went to a local convenience store to get some basics and the guy behind the counter (Muslim immigrant from Pakistan) was watching the news, crying. When he saw us and we nodded to him in understanding he said, "I'm so sorry this hate exists. I wish it weren't so" and we talked with him for about 15 minutes about his anger and his fears for the safety of his family here and in Pakistan.

The next few days at school were about supporting friends and faculty who had family members missing or confirmed dead and finding cathartic release for our concerns. Half of the school bought and wore "I <3 New York" shirts that Friday in a show of support for the citizens of NYC, and we held a huge blood drive as well.
