Ryan Watenpaugh, 34, of Shasta County, California was arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing his girlfriend's tiny Pomeranian during a domestic dispute and then cooking it and serving the dog's meat to her for dinner reported krcrtv.com.
According to authorities, Watenpaugh assaulted the woman on August 4, and although she was able to escape, when she returned her Pomeranian dog, "Bear" was missing.
Within a few weeks the couple reconciled, and Watenpaugh made dinner for the woman. On Sunday, he sent his girlfriend a text message informing her that the meat was from Bear. A few days later, a bag with the dog's paws was left by the woman's front door.
During an investigation of Watenpaugh's home, police found an assault rifle and ammunition.
Watenpaugh is currently in jail and being held in lieu of $250,000 bail. He has been charged with stalking, false imprisonment and animal cruelty.

So did he hate the dog more - his girlfriend more for killing, skinning, cooking and feeding the dog to her and later informing her of it and sending her to chopped off paws, or was he going to snuff her later with the weapons? The idea may be to have the reader associate owners of scary black rifles with sadistic puppy eaters.

The author wished to stress that this nut was a gun owning nut - if the dog was killed with a golf club then the crucial fact that the nut owned a gun would have still appeared in the story.

If I understand this correctly....

The man killed the dog and fed it to her, a poor man's Hannibal Lecter, he later rubs it in like some animal Ted Bundy, with ample evidence that he is not only violent, but psychotic...

And he is charged with a misdemeaner in "animal cruelty"....and they ignore the fact he has an assault rifle?

Ah, at the very least, held pending psychiatric investigation, and an injunction ban on weapons or coming within 100 metres of the woman

Yeah, you're right. They probably misunderstood the police when they said "cooked a dog." Could have been anything.
