Red Storm Rising and other Clancy Books

Has anyone out there read the book Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy? Has anyone read the Powerplay/Net Force/Op-Center series? Or the Jack Ryan, and John Clark Universe?

Red Storm years ago. Excellent as usual.

Red Storm Rising is one of my favorite all time books. Never got much into Clancy after that.

It was my first Clancy, maybe that's why it's my favorite.

Personally, I've enjoyed every Clancy book that I've read.

Yeah, Red Storm Rising has got to be Clancy's best book. The Jack Ryan series book Executive Decision was very good as well. It comes right after Debt of Honor, and is about Ryan's first year or so ( maybe less) as President. It's interesting how he got there from just being a CIA analyst a few years back. I must say, the only problem with Red Storm Rising, was that it didn't cover the actualy ground war as much. You get information about it from Alekseyev, but you only witness it with Mackall, and a bit with Alekseyev and Sergetov (Jr.). Still sucks for the USS Boston and USS Providence...may they rest in peace.

I must admit I started Rainbow Six, but didn't finish it.

I do have Sum of All Fears movie, and I do think it is much better with the Clancy commentary. Almost every scene he is bashing Hollywood making things work/look as they don't really work/look; example bombs with timers on them and the size of nukes.

If you liked the Sum of all Fears movie, you'd love the book. The detail is extraordinary. Clancy devotes some 60 pages, if I remember correctly, just to the assembly of the nuke itself and goes into great detail about what happens in the first seconds of the explosion. However, if you didn't finish Rainbow Six, don't bother, because Sum of all Fears is his longest novel I believe at 1000+ pages.

My top Clancy books would have to be..in no particular order

Hunt for Red October
Rainbow 6
Red Storm Rising
Sum all Fear
Clear and Present Danger
Patriot Games
The Bear and the Dragon

No, it was interesting the way Clancy tells of the details. I'm sure I exaggerated the amount of pages devoted, but it was lengthy. It is a matter of opinion however what is interesting from one person to another

Most military, and Clancy enthusiasts will love it.

One summer in college I decided to read all of the Jack Ryan books.

That was a lot of reading.

Very good books though. My favorites were Debt of Honor and Bear and the Dragon.

Really? Wow, I applaud this. I read Sum of All Fears over one in summer high school along with some others, casually, every other night or so. That took me some time seeing being that the book is over 1000 pages. The only book I have read longer than that is Stephen King's 'IT"

That really is a lot of reading...did you manage to finish?

Yeah I finished the Jack Ryan stuff, but I didn't read any of his other books.

I'm a very fast reader, the only issue for me is the amount of time I have to read. I could read a book a day if I had the time. If I have a long flight somewhere I usually bring two books because I'll almost always finish the first one.

I love Clancy! I used to travel 3out of 4 weeks every month and I always searched for a couple of Clancy books for each trip. That long flight to DC and the time change always gave me some down time to read.

The last time I moved, my brothers made me give away my paperbacks. I really regret it now! Of course, it just gave me room to buy more books. They're really going to hate moving me now. Those two bookcases now have hardcover books in them!

I started with Red October and read all but one of the Jack Ryan series, Red Rabbit I think.

I loved the Op-Center series, got about halfway through the Net Force and never got into Net Force Explorers.

I loved Special Ops and Shadow Warriors. Haven't had a chance to get into more of his non-fiction, yet.

My attention got diverted by political books the past 8 years. I really do need to go back to some good fiction. I'm gonna go hunt down some hardcover Clancy books :mrgreen:
