My dad has seen a lot of senior citizens and people who have been laid off having to recycle scrap metal and aluminum cans just to be able to survive. They need the recycling money to be able to make it. It's great that these people are recycling but it shouldn't be because it's the only way for them to survive.

I can tell you in two words why they're struggling. George Bush. Bush caused this recession and people all over the country are feeling the pain because of it. Bush has been unsuccessful at ending this recession and I doubt that John McCain can be successful at ending it either. I decided to vote early and I voted for all democrats.

Yeah, and that sucks because most major cities have already been picked clean of scrap- down to the copper pipes in old vacant (or sometimes non-vacant!) houses- by junkies and crackheads.

Bush is responsible for retired people having to collect cans? I mean, damn, I knew he was the antichrist, but I didn't know he could go back in time and cause your grandpappy's friends to get fired from their jobs at the steel mill.

I will be among the first to say that Bush is a clown, but he didn't disrupt this particular circus by himself.
Individual responsibility among those of us capable of supporting ourselves is the key to living well. Too many of us are eternal optomists when a certain amount of pessimism is a good thing.
Granted, I am old, but I remember collecting pop bottles along the road for spending money. Each small bottle was good for 2 cents. IIRC, 6 cents would buy a small coca cola. In junior high, one of my teachers admitted to collecting bottles to help her get thru college.
Way too many of us are too stupid to live within our means, and when it backfires we look for someone to blame. That someone is in your mirror, my "whiny" friends, in your mirror.....
Now, that optimism has been shattered, and if we are smart as a nation, we won't go down this road again. We will start making smarter decisions, saving for a rainy day, planning for future retirement, living within our means, etc, and in the long run we will have profited from the current situation.
This has been an educational experience, and I am guessing that a substantial percentage of the population will forget it within a year or so after things are back to "normal" . But those who learn, good for them....

Show us your sources for these allegations. Bush got Rx benefits for seniors through Congress. Republicans ended high taxing on seniors making extra income.

Bush alone couldn't possibly have done this bad a job....he isn't that smart.
I know many people who SHOULD know better but they just didn't plan for retirement. Some underinvested, some just assumed that they could somehow live on SS alone, some thought mom and dad would leave them some money....and many of these people will have to work longer than expected. My wife and I retired early, because we could. That SHOULD be a goal for all of us, but many don't start thinking about it til they are already old...
And not only do many people put all their eggs in one basket, they don't even put enough eggs in that basket....
