Rand Paul plans to keep pushing to defund U.S. Planned Parenthood | Reuters

U.S. Republican presidential contender Rand Paul said on Sunday he plans to push Congress to cut federal funding for the non-profit reproductive healthcare organization Planned Parenthood in a debate over its treatment of aborted fetal tissue. "I think the time is now to discuss whether taxpayer dollars should be going to such a gruesome procedure," Paul, a Kentucky senator, said on Fox News Sunday. "People are outraged by this and I think the American people deserve to have a vote on it."

Good for him

I am curious whether Mr. Paul has considered the overall impact to the budget and whether it would increase due to the fact that millions of women would lose access to medical care.

I'm okay with defunding PP. Too controversial. We need to start defunding things and this is as good a place as any to start.

They can sign up for Obamacare, Medicare or Medicaid and get access to all the medical care they could possibly need.

Those are not facilities and they are also not tailored for female healthcare needs.

I know they aren't facilities. By getting insurance through any of them they have access to medical care, and things like mammograms are covered. No woman would "lose access to medical care" if Planned Parenthood doesn't receive governmental dollars.

You would still have the Government paying for the same procedures then? Are you just trying to make sure they receive it from an entity that is not called "Planned Parenthood?"

I hope he is successful. There are other organizations out there that do not perform abortions that can provide those non-abortion related services.

Any woman who gets medical care at a Planned Parenthood facility today can get one at another facility. Same with any man. PP also accepts most insurance plans including Obamacare.

So the so called 'libertarian' who suppose to be an isolationist is going all out to defund the $1 bil budget of planned parenthood but isn't doing a thing to reel in our $1 TRILLION we spend on defense.

LOL. Paul nothing but a Republican in Libertarian clothes.

To use a different metaphor - is this not throwing the baby out with the bathwater? Planned Parenthood does some good work. If we want to focus on some procedure that is objectionable - like this idea of selling fetal tissue - why not just focus on that and spare the good works that they do?

Unless of course its not really about fetal tissue in the first place.

Here I thought that Obamacare solved that problem.

He would certainly NOT be the first and only one putting on that Halloween costume when it is politically convenient for him to do so.

It reminds me of that scene from CHINATOWN with Nicholson and Dunaway only in this its

I'm a libertarian (slap)

I'm a republican (slap)

I'm a libertarian (slap)

There is a lot of that going around.

Why should the government be paying for a procedure that 19% of people think should be illegal under all circumstances and 51% think should only be legal under certain circumstances?

Because it is a constitutionally protected right and saves the government billions of dollars.

I did not realize that we put medical procedures up to a democratic vote of the people.

So we should be funding the NRA and GOA to pass out guns to the poor? After all the right to keep and bear arms is a constitutionally protected right,it says so in the bill of rights.

I'd support that. I remember when PP set up shop in my community. For over 25 years there was no problem. Then it began providing abortions, and the battle was joined.

It's also true, though, that there are more and more clinics that provide the same services PP does, including on-site mammograms, which most PP clinics don't.

Setting aside the fact that you would not be saving the Government money with this initiative (and would, in fact, add a great deal of cost through additional medical care) and that would break the analogy you're trying to use, I would just note that the Government is already in the business of helping people to pay for medical care. They are not in the business of supplying guns to civilians.

This is one of maybe two or three areas of platform that I vehemently disagree with Paul on. I like his constitutionalism, and his desire to reign in the banks and redistribute executive authority. However, while I am somewhat against abortion, it is none of my business what someone else wants to do with their body, let alone the government's.

So you support medicare/medicaid for all?

Off topic. This is about funding Planned Parenthood, not Medicaid/Medicare for all. I support Medicaid/Medicare paying for whatever preventive treatment people get at Planned Parenthood just like they pay for whatever treatment people get at any facility that does mammograms, prescribes birth control, does pap smears, etc.
