Question for Californians

There are certainly deserts in southern California, but the L.A. region is a Mediterranean climate similar to that of Greece or Southern Italy.
The same as the city of San Diego, very Mediterranean climate. Do we have deserts in the state of CA? Absolutely, but they're not in major metropolitan areas that are heavily populated.

I had a really good geography teacher when I was 12 and learning the Koppen system was the best part about it.

It's true.

But guess what? 47 is a dolt. The EO...My Bold Added

Putting People over Fish: Stopping Radical Environmentalism to Provide Water to Southern California

I hereby direct the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of the Interior, in consultation with the heads of other departments and agencies of the United States as necessary, to immediately restart the work from my first Administration by the National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and other agencies to route more water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to other parts of the state for use by the people there who desperately need a reliable water supply.

During my first term, the State of California, at the direction of its Governor, filed a lawsuit to stop my Administration from implementing improvements to California’s water infrastructure. My Administration’s plan would have allowed enormous amounts of water to flow from the snow melt and rainwater in rivers in Northern California to beneficial use in the Central Valley and Southern California. This catastrophic halt was allegedly in protection of the Delta smelt and other species of fish. Today, this enormous water supply flows wastefully into the Pacific Ocean.

The recent deadly and historically destructive wildfires in Southern California underscore why the State of California needs a reliable water supply and sound vegetation management practices in order to provide water desperately needed there, and why this plan must immediately be reimplemented.
Within 90 days of the date of this memorandum, the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of the Interior shall report to me regarding the progress made in implementing the policies in this memorandum and provide any recommendations regarding future implementation.

The water project he is referring to is not connected to consumer water infrastructure. Any added water will go to farmers and consumer serving reservoirs in the Central Valley. None of it will go to Los Angeles. This is not about that. It is about firing a direct broadside against the Federal Endangered Species Act.

47 appears to be unable to tell the truth about anything, most particularly about his level of intelligence.
He didn't write that, I am sure. And, I doubt that he even read it. Someone probably told him, in a few sentences, what it said and then he wrote his GD awful big signature on it

I think that the real issue behind Southern Californias water shortage is that Southern California is a ****ing desert. Literally.

LA is a desert, and it is surrounded by deserts. They have to steal water from the Owens River Valley, the Colorado River, Oregon, NorCal, etc.
LA has a semi-arid and hot-summer-mediterranean climate inland and a cold-summer climate along the coast. It's no more a desert than say Spain or parts of Greece.

But you are correct that it does not have enough local water to sustain 12 million people. They have to import it. So does pretty much every other major city on the planet.

I don't think LA gets any water from Oregon. Too far away and too many mountains.

Asking strictly to understand your perspective, with a promise of no snarky rebuttal: why do you, as a presumed supporter, think Trump would post this when it is so easily debunked? What's the strategy here?

I would invite any Trump supporter to take a shot at this one, with the same promise of no rebuttal.
I don't know or care why Trump posted that. He probably heard something from someone and felt he had to give leftists something to outrage over.

It's a weird symbiotic relationship of sorts. They need the constant outrage and he needs the constant attention.

I pay attention to what he does, not what he says.

It is called narcissistic supply.

....and boy, do they ever supply it in spades

It is not technically a desert but any place that does not have water, rarely rains and is always brown, filled with dirt and bushes and is filled with rattlesnakes and scorpions and coyotes is a desert in my opinion. ;)

Honestly, I don't get it - and please don't read this as a typical Trump sucks rant, I'm kind of bored with that, I'm more interested in figuring out why you guys like him so much.

To me this isn't just self defeating for him, but also for his supporters. With Trudeau on the way out it's something I understand a little about, that cringe at the thought of him giving his detractors (and therefore his supporters' detractors) so much ammo for such stupid reasons.

You say you don't care what he says, but what he says is a big part of the shit you guys have to take from us insufferable lefties... hehe Doesn't that ever get old? Is it not possible for him to accomplish what you want him to accomplish without making himself, and by extension the people who support him, look like a dumbass?

The tariff issue aside, Joe Biden should have given many more moments for fodder than Trump. Biden was the quintessential dumbass but you're used to people like that. Trudeau? ;)

In response to another member on a similar thread
Thanks.
It confirms that the man is a ranting lunatic. If he wants to bathe in glory, let him. We can fact check ourselves.
I am also glad that someone is doing something that makes a difference.
How many lives were claimed? How many acres of precious land was scorched, how many animals suffered?
Can't we just set politics aside for a minute and just do what is necessary to get the job done?

Southern California is not always brown. It receives rainfall in the winter and earliest spring, which greens up the landscape before summers set in. The annual rainfall in L.A. is around 14 inches a year.

Here is a rainfall map if you are interested.

There are some mountains... look, I know what SoCal is like as well as the entire state. Been all over it a million times... including a few weeks ago.

Thank you though!! :)

I mean... lol... I'm not sure i ever attempted to come off as all stary eyed over Biden. I seem to remember feeling bad for you guys over what you had to choose from, and that was before the Harris switch up. To me it was more about who was going to bring the least chaos. Probably don't need to dwell on the fact that you and i would likely disagree on who that would be. ;)

I know you get frustrated with the "unnecessary bullshit" aspect of Trump, so I'm not going to beat a dead horse - be proud of me, i deleted a whole wall of text where I was really giving you the gears... lol

But, yes, Biden said some dumb shit too... lol The person i was trying to ask didn't seem the type to get frustrated with what Biden gifted to the meme community, so it didn't really seem worthwhile going there, I already knew the answer.

And hopefully you didn't miss the part of the post you responded to where i specifically said I could commiserate because of the dumb shit Trudeau did, with much the same effect domestically. We'll leave the international consequences out of it, i think we've nearly fully explored that one.. hehe

Thank you for pointing out the obvious differences between a Mediterranean climate and desert climates.

Antelope Valley, high desert in northern Los Angeles County, has annual rainfall around 7.84” per year. https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/@5558920/climate

Coachella Valley, low desert in Riverside County, receives around 2.95” of rain annually. https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/usa/coachella/climate

Joshua trees, icons of desert landscapes, are native to both the Antelope and Coachella Valleys, and are not present in Mediterranean climates.

Not all of Southern California is a Mediterranean climate, but the City of Los Angeles definitely is. You would know this if you spent time in the area.

When I lived in Topanga Canyon, there were rattlesnakes and coyotes, but in a Mediterranean climate. Never saw a scorpion, but there were tarantulas.

Been living in LA my entire life.

Adderall is a hell of a drug.

I lived there for over 30 years. During the summer both are hot and dry, just in varying degrees. Winters are cooler for Mediterranean like areas... but anybody that has lived there knows that before the city covered everything there were dry areas with little growth beyond some bushes and dry areas.

Seen a million scorpions as well as tarantulas, rattlesnakes, etc.

Been living in LA my entire life.

Not only did I live there 30 years I was an outdoorsman. All over the place.

It is not technically a desert... but it is dry and brown. If a person wants to see a difference go to Northen California, or the Coastal Ranges.

Showing that what I said was correct... Los Angeles is surrounded by desert. Mojave Desert. Colorado Desert. The Great Basin Desert.

Dry — during summer drought (typical of Mediterranean climates).

You’ll have a difficult time explaining away the various native oaks, sycamore, walnut, toyon, etc — all trees that actually exist and contradict your vision of a perennially parched landscape.

If one notices natural landscapes, the differences between Mediterranean Los Angeles and desert Palm Springs, Palmdale, and Lancaster are readily apparent.

My argument was never that Los Angeles is an actual desert... it was that there is limited water there and those complaining about Trump and lack or water or whatever, are idiots because Southern California is essentially a desert surrounded by desert, meaning 20 million people will not have access to water and whining about it and trying to assign blame is pretty stupid. 80% of the water is imported/stolen. Stolen form the Owens River Valley, the Colorado River and the Northwest.

Again, Los Angeles is NOT a desert.

You’re denying that you made this assertion after two of us have pointed out your error.

The issues for Los Angeles come not from the type of climate, but the pressure the population puts on resources. With global climate change, weather events are becoming more extreme: Longer droughts, fiercer winds, heavier rains during atmospheric rivers. We are facing uncharted territory, and leaders need to prepare for a changing climate.

Again, Los Angeles is NOT a desert.

I said that it wasn't literally a desert... maybe four times now. All that is happening is that YOU are missing the point.

You’re denying that you made this assertion after two of us have pointed out your error.

Sure. People saying something is "Hot As Hell" are literally claiming that Hell is ___________ . LOL

Just quit while you are ahead, kinda ahead... well, not ahead at all.

Going back to your first assertion — see #12 on page 1 — your initial comments on Los Angeles — and then #47 where I copied your words from #12.

LA is a desert ~ Bodi

Can you simply admit that you misspoke, or are we to pretend that #12 was never written?

Doesn’t matter that much now as it’s been demonstrated that no admission is forthcoming.
