That is, Don't talk if you've actually committed a crime and are too chicken **** to take personal responsibility for your actions like a grown adult. Oh and don't victimize anybody again of course.
The rest I agree with.
There are better ways to learn a lesson than to throw your life away and get sent to prison. It’d be better for society if you anonymously give a large gift to your victim and avoid prosecution.
It is possible to avoid further police harassment if you pull off a convincing argument to the cop that you’re the wrong person. The problem is, very few people are capable of pulling this off, and you won’t necessarily know if it’s possible in the situation until it’s too late. Don’t even try it if you’re young, poor, male, or black. You’re more likely to need a lawyer if you don’t cooperate, but you’re more likely to land in jail if you do cooperate. You should respectfully state that a lawyer advised you to never talk to the police, even if innocent. This will show the cop that their usual tricks won’t work, and won’t necessarily prove to them in their minds that you’re the right person, as most denials of giving a statement may. If applicable, calmly state, "I do not consent to any searches."
