Quebec to go for racist legislation?

Maybe better to have anyone practicing a religion display their affiliation?
;)

Good to know if they're a Wiccan, or maybe leaning to practices such as FGM, circumcision or Witch Doctor healing with chicken parts...or weed.

The undercurrent to this suggestion is that religious people, consciously or unconsciously, live their lives according to their religious beliefs and biases therein.

I certainly agree with this. Hell, I haven't a clue what most religious symbolism refers to or what is "required" and what is simply fundementalist suppression of members of a particular faith - I really could care less, since I'm not at all religious. But I respect that others may feel differently and be affected differently, for their own personal religious reasons/beliefs. And I believe a secular government should respect those feelings when providing services. While not completely analogous, I'd say it's similar to my approach to abortion - I don't like it, but I respect people's right to chose their own path as long as it doesn't adversely impact someone else. Respecting someone's personal choices doesn't mean accepting those choices.

I couldn't agree any more. :applaud

Some so called religious regalia or symbols are just that, symbols and customs and tribal or sectarian in practice.

A cross of course, but not all Jews require a kippa to be worn. Not all Muslims consider a niqab or burka as anything but a custom, a custom seldom followed in Islamic countries a generation ago

A stylized fish may be a traditional Christian symbol, if such is worn, possibly a large symbolic one instead of a crucifix, would it be in conflict in Quebec?

A hot cross bun perhaps carried into a government job, or, an Easter--egg- bunny? Unacceptable?

A piece of Judaic jewelry..? A menorah on a chain,or a chi openly displayed symbolic of Judaism ?

It becomes a matter of judgment, and in Quebec given the jejune and asinine practices of the language police I tend to expect very poor judgment in any matter requiring a modicum of reality or common sense.
Parodies of the ichthys symbol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia,

If one wishes to go to the ridiculous and sublime, a Brit milah -bris or male circumcision is a

The Brit Milah or Bris. .
The brit milah, circumcision, is a physical symbol of the relationship between G-d and the Jewish people. It is a constant reminder of what the Jewish mission entails.

is a Jewish religious male circumcision ceremony performed on 8-day-old male infants by a mohel.

So a Jew walks into his government job, goes to the urinal and there viewable by anyone he displays his religiosity, his religiously mutilated member, a Semitic Jewish religious symbol of a covenant (THE HORROR! ;) ) with G-d.

Maybe then he should go pee in a synagogue or public urinal... :2razz:

I can anticipate the nuts from both sides of the issue coming out for a field day.
Certainly the issue is to stop anyone from wearing a mask. Why not simply pass that law? Too specific?

I dunno. I think there's more to it. They are acting like a bunch of dictators.

I think they're trying to provoke federal interefrence and get their support to increase before the next election. It's always a vote-getter to be seen to be standing up to the feds.

That and to divert attention from the economy. It also means they don't have to pretend to do anything about the corruption wile everyone is talking about this.

My guess would be advance notice to prospective immigrants so that there are no misunderstandings on arrival. What do you think?

In the unlikely case this idiocy will succeed, the prospective immigrants will be more than welcome, I am sure, in any other Canadian province, where such (eh, Anglo-Saxon, should I say in a most bigoted fashion?) values as freedom of expression are still en vogue.

Ontario held a special vote on the issue, on Sept 19.

"In the opinion of the House, the government of Ontario shall oppose any legislation that would restrict or prohibit people's freedom of expression and religion in public places and affirm that Ontario greatly values our diverse population and the social, cultural, and economic contributions that help make our society thrive."

The vote in support of the motion was unanimous. No disagreement between Conservatives, Liberals and the New Dem socialists, on this one.
