For the first time, astronomers have found a planet smack in the middle of the habitable zone of its sunlike star, where temperatures are good for life. “If this planet has a surface, it would have a very nice temperature of some 70° Fahrenheit [21°C],” says William Borucki of NASA’s Ames Research Center here, who is the principal investigator of NASA’s Kepler space telescope. “[It's] another milestone on the journey of discovering Earth’s twin,” adds Ames director Simon “Pete” Worden.

Their is still a lot of unknowns involved concerning the make up of the planet, mass & composition etc. , but this is the first time I have been really excited over a newly discovered planet.

yeah I hope there is life there to bad according to neil degrasse tyson it would take us 300, 000 years to get there and even at the speed of light it wil take 600 years. Wheres my warp drive?

Another step towards proving that life-bearing planets are not fiction. :)

Yes, I heard this and it's really cool. Too bad so far away, that probes probably aren't even conceivable. I suppose if it were reachable and had inhabitants of high intelligence, they could have annihilated us by now.

Very interesting.

Is there any data on oxygen/carbon dioxide levels? Is it inhabitable? Can plants grow?

This has me excited.

I have heard they are planning radio wave type communications which is the fastest way to contact any intelligent life... an opening salvo in the reconnaissance so to speak.

Nothing yet, but I am sure they are planning more experiments to gather additional data.

I hear it is a lot larger than Earth, which means the gravity is a lot more.

Yeah... and it will get there in 600 years. Still a cool thing to think about.

If the difference is substantial, then our lifestyles will make dramatic changes. Plumper bodies, shorter heights, more muscle, etc...

Dwarves.

It'll be populated by dwarves.

The fantasy type, that is.
