Portugal runs for four days straight on renewable energy alone | Environment | The Guardian

Portugal kept its lights on with renewable energy alone for four consecutive days last week in a clean energy milestone revealed by data analysis of national energy network figures.

Electricity consumption in the country was fully covered by solar, wind and hydro power in an extraordinary 107-hour run that lasted from 6.45am on Saturday 7 May until 5.45pm the following Wednesday, the analysis says.

News of the zero emissions landmark comes just days after Germany announced that clean energy had powered almost all its electricity needs on Sunday 15 May, with power prices turning negative at several times in the day – effectively paying consumers to use it.

This is excellent, and it's only going to get better.

Good for Portugal. But this isn't something new in the world. Several places in the US ran exclusively on hydro, and year round, for many decades.

Tyranny! Socialism is destroying Europe! All Real Americans MUST keep renewable energy out of the U.S. before such catastrophes destroy the American way of life!!!!!

You know better than that Glen. ;) I haven't met anyone not in favor of renewable energy. People are upset with our gov't going bout it the wrong way.

I most certainly have met people against renewable energy, who'd argue all day long about how inefficient it is, and how it's a fool's dream.

All you have to do is Google around and you'll find laws that were passed to discourage solar power. Heck, look at the Koch brothers (who own Arco gas, btw) who have been funding laws across the nation to discourage renewable power...obviously, because the pittance they spend on buying legislators pays great dividends when more of their oil is sold. Conservatives gripe about the subsidies that have been given to renewable energy...but Big Oil gets FAR more in subsidies - which isn't something the Right tells you, is it?

Look at this discussion on Quora, at the history presented of how Big Oil was so opposed to electric vehicles. It's the same thing in their efforts against renewable energy - it's all about their bottom line.

The inherent power lags and lack of dependability that comes with renewables are being addressed at least in Germany with Coal fired plants

Germans are also suffering the financial consequence of their Govt's decision to switch ovwr to renewables

Paying twice per kilowatt hour than their neighbors a d 3 times more per kilowatt hour than the average American

Hey, that is an accomplishment, there is no doubt.

But if you do the math, that is about 1% of the year, there are still another 361 days to reliably source our requirements for energy. Thank god for fossil and nuclear energy. Most of us don't mind at all that advances are being made, but they should not be made at tax payer expense and should be competitive in the marketplace.

Until then, all the detractors of current and reliable energy are just flapping in the wind...oh but that we could somehow harness the wasted energy being released from those sources.

There's quite a bit of propaganda out there poorly disguised as "proof " of renewable energy's feasibility

Unfortunately its a politically charged issue, but it shouldn't be. The viability of any technology can easily be measured objectively but thats not the case with renewables

Consumers and Corporations and workers are paying the price for a extremely expensive and inefficient technology that should have never seen the light of day

At least on this scale. The left is banking on the average consumers lack of technical prowess to continue pushing this as a comparable and clean alternative but the average consumer in Nations like Germany can only bear the substantial burden of subsidizing renewable energy for so long

Yea when Germany reached their new record of 78 % of the Nation being powered by renewable energy they Left and the naive celebrated and used it as proof that renewables are the way to go.

What wasn't widely reported is that it was on a weekedn day, where most of their manufacturing was shut down, the wind in the North was perfect for their windtubines and it was a sunny day in the South so their solar plants were operating at peak efficiency

And it was only for a short amount of time. What also wasn't reported is that Germans pay 3 times what the average American pays for electricity and their are large numbers of German citizens who have been effectively priced out of electricity

Eh, until the real costs of fossil fuels are actually paid for by those using them, price comparisons will never be valid.

What " real cost " would you be referring too ? Lemme guess. AGW will lead to apocalyptic environmental and economic destruction in the future ?

Our only hope of avoiding this is to enact economy killing regulations and force a substandard veey expensive technology onto the American people

pretty cool. a milestone on the path to what someday might be, and probably will, assuming that we apply ourselves.

Do you want to hear about the cost or do you just want to put words in my mouth?

Because it sure looks like you're a lot more interested in the second part. Help me out here.
