Poll: Half of Americans now predict U.S. may 'cease to be a democracy' someday

It is like Cheney… I do not agree with her on her politics at all.

She does at least reside in reality.

It is a very low bar to be a profile in courage these days.
LOL Reality

Like the progressives in San Francisco thought that Boudin's policies to not enforce the law were wonderful. How did that reality work out for them?

Why do you assume no democracy means no rules? Government isn't the only source of law, in fact it is a particularly bad source of law. Would you like to me to give you a thousand or so examples of dumbass government laws?
No, instead give me even one dumb arse idea of of this other source of law.

And if you say religion I will be laughing at you.

Reality like who won the 2020 election.

Not policy disagreements.

America is not a democracy. If it was the government would hold a referendum over the abortion issue rather than just rely on the opinion of nine judges.
It’s an oligarchy with the pretense of a representative republic but it’s not even that because a republic is a democracy.

You can call yourself a democracy in much the same way north korea calls itself a democratic republic.

But like them the thought of an american politician actually concerning themselves with what the public want is a laughable suggestion.

That died with the rise of baby boomer conservatism

GOt it. Your reality is only viewed through a Trump lens.

Not a Trump lens… just an example.

Another example is Global Climate Change.

The political argument should have been what to do about it… but the petroleum companies spent a lot of money to get people to argue that it doesn’t exist.

Basically… a separate and false reality had to be fought against instead of what solutions could be reached

Agreed - the devil is in the details.

How do partisans find common ground and the ability to compromise when each is convinced the other side is utterly antithetical to democracy, American values, etc? Especially when there is a not sizable percentage of Americans for whom apathy is the preferred response.

It's not looking good.
Well ive never heard fox news call a democrat an American so…..

The more I see topics like this the more I'm convinced that Americans are clinacally depressed.
It's as if as soon as the country isn't going exactly as they want some people think "The end is nigh!!!!!" and predict either civil war or economic collapse or even both.

I thought Americans were supposed to be endlessly optimistic and with a can do attitute?
For me its been a culmination of a long series of events and a culture of half of voters that believes America is exclusively theirs. Its not much different from the white nationalism of the past, they just dropped race from the equation.

Probably a bad choice. Biden explicitly ran on ending the use of fossil fuel. He executed dozens of EOs targeted at restricting the oil and gas industry. Surprise, surprise, the price of gas skyrocketed. Now he's trying to convince Americans that gas prices are Putin's fault, big oil's fault, refiners fault, Trump's fault. Anybody's fault but his administation.

Bizzare alternate reality that your guy is trying to sell us.

Where as a republic is tyranny from a minority.

Whatever. They're both awful.

No, instead give me even one dumb arse idea of of this other source of law.

The market, of course. Private law is everywhere. The most prominent example is private arbitration firms which create their own law for firms to deal with each other, and their laws are written by people who understand the subject matter and have a strong incentive to get it right. For a more everyday example, consider the rules on this forum, which you voluntarily agree to abide by.

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that most Democrats (55%) and Republicans (53%) now believe it is “likely” that America will “cease to be a democracy in the future” — a stunning expression of bipartisan despair about the direction of the country.

More than half of Democrats and half of Republicans believe America will cease to be a democracy in the future. Further? Nearly half of Americans have zero interest in the January 6th hearings.

So while the data indicates that many Americans seem to be losing faith in the future of U.S. democracy, relatively few seem interested in reckoning with a real-life attempt to undermine it. That raises a disturbing question: Have Americans simply given up on democracy?

The poll doesn’t go quite that far. But it does suggest that Americans have largely given up on each other.

That last part feels especially accurate, and especially sad. Not a lot to be optimistic about here. Jingoism and rhetoric, partisan sniping and snark are easy - too few seeming willing to rise above and put in the hard work democracy requires.

I'm no different, or better.
That makes sense. See, in 2016 there was a guy named Trump that got elected president via a democratic process. Roughly half the nation lost their shit over that development and now, after careful consideration and dumptrucks full of money earmarked to "protect democracy" we are a nation on a mission to only elect candidates from the "approved" pool of nominees. Approval comes from the political class and as long as they stay in power they get to determine how we define "democracy". We do this, of course, bearing in mind that even North Korea has democratic elections.

Just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth:

9/11 did a number on our collective consciousness. We were incredibly unified and resolved in the immediate aftermath, but with the invasion of Iraq we began a downward spiral into partisan rancor and stagnation. Trump exploited the situation for his personal gain, and the worst of American extremism was enabled. And now? We have the polling you see - Red State and Blue State America have no faith in each other.
America is just another empire in decline and Trump is the culmination of whats been called the imperial presidency. The thing about America that is making it like most empires is we cant handle the decline in any other way than spoiled little babies. We thought merely wishing and hoping and praying and just believing with all our hearts! Would keep us in first place.

Makes me wonder if the British empire fell in a similar manner.

Holding Trump accountable to me is so important because it would be finally congress reasserting its proper authority as a co-equal branch, taking power from the imperial presidency.

You are right. Biden is failing on that promise. But that isn’t the point I was making.

The effort to curb fossil fuel use should have started 30 years ago. It would have been cheaper to do and would have mitigated more effects of climate change.

Now we are up against a wall without adequate technology in place, More robust energy options and greater cushion from global oil shocks.

But nope…. Had to make sure that the petroleum companies continued to make money… so create an alternate reality that ****s over everyone.

Lycanthrope:

According to researchers at Princeton and Northwestern Universities the change has already happened. You've moved from a republic legitimised by representative democracy to an illegitimate oligarchy.

So the "Democracy" ship may have already sailed.

Cheers and be well subjugated.
Evilroddy.

For the 90% of people want to use the power of government to force others to do what they want, they are the problem. Partisan bickering is the symptom.

Well that solves that. Cheers!

And joined the other half who lost their shit before then.

Oh look, another round of Trump cultists sobbing bitterly because their Dear Leader got kicked out on his ass.

I think that a good chunk of people have.

There is no longer a shared reality and that is dangerous.

There are those on the right who believe that they and they alone are the only one’s able to wield power and there are those on the left who are afraid to react to that threat in a reciprocal way for fear of breaking democracy further.

Another poster that clings to what ever BS it's fed.

Like democrats freaking out because asian students perform better than their pet race and and go on a binge of denying them access to universities and public schools?
