Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72, 161]

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH

Oh he's quite serious unfortunately.

I've seen people get offended at the stupidest of things before like Halloween costumes, video games, and even air conditioning. But getting offended at the terms black hole and Black Friday? That's on a entirely different level of stupid.

I don't understand for the life of me how anyone could possibly find the terms black hole or Black Friday offensive.

Same here. Frankly its one reason that I'm so against political correctness. People getting offended at stupid terms that have nothing to do with them. And it seems to be getting worse since this guy. Just the other day I read a thread here .... never mind had it all written out but decided not to post it in order to not derail the thread. Let's just say that its getting worse and leave it at that. Those video's and what's being talked about in that other thread are more than enough proof to me that pledges such as what HM wants is more dangerous than what good he's trying to accomplish with it. I don't blame him for wanting something like it. Its a good thought. But reality MUST start taking a front seat and we shouldn't be letting our wishes, hopes, and dreams take that seat.

Agreed. I'm vehemently against political correctness as well. But what PC is trying to do today is not even about trying not to offend others with language, because anything you say can be offensive to somebody. Anybody can be offended at any statement that anybody makes.

What PC is really about is controlling people's sensibilities; people taking their own sensibilities and saying these are the only "valid" sensibilities, which is basically language control.

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

One thing that is obvious to me coming out of the terrible events of a week ago in Orlando is that all the gay bashing and homophobic language in our society contributes to an environment which makes acts like this possible since the perpetrator can rationalize it as somehow justified on a marginalized and outsider group who is openly mocked, scorned and ridiculed by even decent people.

I would hope we lear a valuable lesson from the 49 people killed and the lesson is one thing we all can do is STOP OUR OWN HATE SPEECH.

No more gay jokes.

No more derogatory 'homo' references.

No more attacks on somebody saying they perform homosexual acts. to demean or insult them.

No more. Enough is enough.

I remember being in grade school and there was this boy who was very awkward and had rather large buck teeth and was puny and small and lots of other kids used to tease him rather badly. And I also participated from time to time. And then one day when he stood up to recite something, a kid pulled his chair back and when he sat down he banged his chin on the desk and messed up some teeth pretty badly.

Now this was a Catholic school and there was hell to pay for that as the boy who did it was never seen again after that day being expelled. And the rest of us were lectured with great severity about what happened and how we made it all possible. And that boy was never picked on again as far as I know since we all say that enough is enough.

Lets learn from Orlando and each pledge to abstain from homophobic hate speech even if we think its harmless or just teasing or playing around or any other phony justification we can think up to defend its use.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and the solution to the problem starts with each of us.

I am not sure that it might not be the overshoot of liberal policies that is triggering backlash. In any event, in Orlando the gay aspect seems to have been more incidental. The guy was disturbed and could have as easily shot up Disney World or some other soft target he knew well enough.

Show me where Blacks have gotten offended at the words "black hole" and where that has had a significant impact on the use of the term.

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

Free Speech is not a tiny price.

I'm sorry, but freedom of speech isn't a "tiny price to pay".

So in other words, it is more important for people to say whatever they want, even if it causes destruction or indirectly incites violence (which is allowed under free speech, unfortunately)? Keep in mind that for most people, we are talking about a tiny fraction of what they say.

Yes. Because the destruction of free speech can cause far more destruction than what free speech can cause.

Yes. Because the destruction of free speech can cause far more destruction than what free speech can cause.

Then black lives, gay lives, etc. don't really matter.

I'm not talking about blacks in general. I'm talking about the ONE black guy in the video that Kal'Stang posted that took offense at the terms black hole and Black Friday.

That's one person in one video. If I really want to find a particular instance of somebody saying something crazy, I can find it if I look hard enough.

Who decided to become violent? Is it the speaker or the person that acted because of it? Is the person that decided to act violent in control of their own actions? Did anyone coerce them to become violent?

Yes it is entirely more important that we protect freedom of speech, than to start regulating what others say (language control).

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

I'm kind of curious how you came to that conclusion. Saying people have the right to speak their mind has nothing to do with the importance of someones life.

Is this a fear that Big Brother is going to get us? You do know that Europe has been regulating hate speech for decades, right?

OK? I understand it's only that one guy that said that.

You do realize they arrest people for speaking their mind on Twitter, right? Tell me, do you want to get arrested because of something you said on Twitter?

Incendiary language causes fires, metaphorically speaking. Remember how many times Bill O'Reilly called Dr. George Tiller "Tiller the Killer" before he was murdered by a prolife fanatic?

You do understand that that has already happened before, right?

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH

See here's the thing, Governess: When a black man says something crazy, it's "that black guy" doing it. When a white man does the same, it's "that crazy guy" doing it.

In other words, disenfranchised groups are much more likely to be framed for bad behavior of one single person within that group. We see this effect all the time.

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

If it wasn't for free speech none of those groups that you talk about there wouldn't even have any of the Rights that they now rightly currently enjoy. And their time without those Rights were far worse than the Orlando shooting, San Bernardino shooting, Charleston shooting, Aurora shooting, Sandy Hook shooting, and even the 9/11 attack COMBINED.

I do find it cute that you just tried to play the race and homophobic card though, and used smoothly enough to not actually state it, yet certainly imply it.

Go ahead and tell that to the families of the victims of these killings, and see how well that works out for you. And hasn't one of our two major political parties--not you specifically, but definitely that party--been in strong favor of returning to those times?

I do find it cute that you just tried to play the race and homophobic card though, and used smoothly enough to not actually state it, yet certainly imply it.

So we can have a discussion about free speech and hate speech, but definitely not about racism and homophobia?

Ummm...no. The peoples actions that heard the speech causes the fires, someones death, or some other harm. If I tell a group of people to go kill a certain person they can either decide to take my words to heart and do what I ask or tell me I'm a crazy SOB and walk off.

Also, George Tiller was a killer. Calling him something that is factually correct is not wrong.

On a side note, I enjoy saying the rhyme tiller the killer. :D

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

Yes. Because the destruction of free speech can cause far more destruction than what free speech can cause.

How does a person not insulting others with accusations or claims of homosexual behavior or joking about them and their perceived behavior hurt free speech is the person does it voluntarily as an awareness of its possible societal harm?
