Philadelphia gas station owner hires heavily armed guards to protect business: 'We are tired of this nonsense'

If the government won’t provide basic policing services, it’s up to the residents to take care of their own safety and security.
The "government"? You mean the city? And what do you consider "basic policing services"? I expect there are quite a few gas stations in Philly. Do you expect the police to keep a constant eye on every one? Government agencies have no duty to protect individual citizens or individual businesses.

In DeShaney vs. Winnebago and Town of Castle Rock vs. Gonzales, the Supreme Court ruled that police agencies are not obligated to provide protection to individual citizens.

Yep, and it’s odd that the same people making light or disparaging this situation are a lot of the same ones who are against people carrying firearms to protect themselves.

So why doesn't he carry a firearm to protect himself?

Crime is everywhere. Not just in Philly. We have dozens of security for hire companies here in NH. Lots of companies hire them. Is that news?

There is a long standing acknowledgment that gas/convenience stores are very popular targets for shoplifting and robbery.

Business owners know this before opening shop and should act accordingly.

What, exactly would your solution be? A cop at every gas station at the taxpayer expense?
My solution would be the correct number of police officers for the size of the population, stop “defunding the police”, and be forceful about convicting and incarcerating people who are found guilty of violent crimes.

Next up? Liquor stores are favorite targets too... Lol

I would guess that he does.

No, not to individual citizens, but to the city at large.

Ahhh.. So the right can start a thread about guy in a Blue State that's concerned about crime.. But I can't point out crime in red states?

Terrible rules...
Of course you can. Do you need help understanding how the “Start Thread” function works here?

Yeah.. Because there's no crime in red states.. All these articles I read from red states about their crime, and mass shootings, and murder /suicides are, to quote Archie Bunker, 'are pigments of my imagination'...

True.

I'm wondering if part of the reason Republicans have been so freaked-out by crime going into the recent election, is because of the recent trends of higher murder & violence rates in Red Sates compared to Blue States, coinciding with murder & violence rates increasing in rural areas & falling in urban areas.

Where murder & is dropping in cities, it is increasing rural areas - particularly in Red states. I have no idea why, but suspect it is tied to the slide in rural economics, healthcare, social services, and general lack of opportunity. Despair has its price.

I would guess that he does.

Okay. So this thread is just about some guy hiring a security firm. There are literally thousands of them all over the country. I'm trying to understand what reaction you're looking for.

I wasn’t looking for a reaction. I was hoping for an adult discussion.

A Philadelphia gas station owner fed up with incessant crime threatening his employees and customers hired heavily armed security guards to watch over his business.

Neil Patel, operator of a Karco gas station at Broad and Clearfield streets in North Philadelphia, recruited Pennsylvania S.I.T.E Agents clad with Kevlar vest and AR-15s or shotguns.

<snip>

The final straw for Patel came after he said his business was vandalized by young people and an ATM machine was stolen. His car was also a casualty of crime around the area.

Good for him. If the government won’t provide basic policing services, it’s up to the residents to take care of their own safety and security.
This has got to be fake news, because according to the Left here on DP, it's Red areas that have high crime.

No, not to individual citizens, but to the city at large.
It's kinda hard to be everywhere at once. What you're asking for, apparently, is something like Minority Report. A cool movie, but... yeah, fiction.

What's the real story? That crime exists?

I think everyone knows that. Crime has existed for thousands of years.
I think the real story might be that economic injustices cause crime to skyrocket. So, the question might be: "What is wrong with business as usual in the USA?"

Upstate NY is solid Republican.. And except for the tourist areas the economies up there are in the toilet..

Crime is on the rise up there.. Your post is spot on...

Yeah, that seems to be the prevailing message, that crime is everywhere, no big deal, etc.

A successful OP always is indicated by the OP going on defense just after posting………..

What big Dem cities is murder dropping in?
The increase in rural crime is part in the city thugs are branching out to the burbs and the fact that there is no recourse for actions. It is a free for all.

Ever been to St. Lawrence County? I feel safer in Harlem.

Well, there's also the fact that the pandemic caused a lot of businesses to simply close -- restaurants, theaters, etc. That's a lot of workers who suddenly don't have a job anymore. Clearly, some of them had to turn to crime in order to survive.
