First a conversation at the water cooler

Two people are having a conversation
Person one: "You know that road we both drove to get to work ? You should pay five times more than me for that road. It's only fair"
Person two" You mean because I do work that is more valuable than you"

So why is it 'Fair' that person two should pay 5 times more for that same road?

None of this makes any sense as written,

Get off my sidewalk and roads you free loaders

I demand the military and police stop protecting those who do not pay taxes

It sounds like an asshole verbally assaulted a normal human being with whining about paying taxes. The normie is all “wtf? I just want some ****ing water”

I’m open to other interpretations though?

The answer is three potatoes.

Sure it does. Person 2 creates much more value for society than person 1, yet the political left believes that because he creates more value, he should be punished with a much higher tax rate than person 1.

Because person 2 never really achieved anything on his own and merely victimized person one, person one’s family and everyone else he came across. Aside from that he probably voted for Trump and seeks to co-opt the government for his own purposes while enslaving all people of color.

Interesting how all the usual suspects are avoiding this simple question like the plague.

Is this where progressive tax rates have to be explained?

It’s important to punish successful people because they just might go off and become independent thus cutting off your money stream.

Interesting broad brush view of anybody who is successful! And very telling.

no. They are already are progressive. Even though ~ 40 % of taxpayers pay zero, they are apparently not progressive enough for some
So The question is- what exactly is a 'fair'' share and why is it deemed fair? If we have that number we won't have to keep having these discussions all the ime.

“Punished”. *L*

By what metric is it determined that person 2 created much more value to society than person 1?

40% pay no federal income taxes, they will be paying directly or indirectly

Sales taxes, property taxes, FICA taxes etc.

It all depends on what is wanted for the country

A Victorian England with lots of very wealthy people, with a large underclass with little to no hope of moving out of poverty. That would be the result of minimal taxes and minimal government assistance.

Or a country that does have higher taxes, that provides assistance, where lower and middle income income people have higher economic mobility

Is the first fair to the rich, probably but it is not going to be a stable country. It will have lots of violence and crime. Adding a lot of costs to doing business and living

Edited for clarity

good answer.

In this case, it's his pay. Generally (but not always), what other people are willing to pay for your skills is based on how much value you create. An electrical engineer creates much, much more value than a floor sweeper, and his paycheck reflects it.

When you tax something, you get less of it. Observe how progressives use taxation a means of social engineering - they place high taxes on gasoline and cigarettes because they understand (due to the law of demand) that the high taxes will reduce consumption of both.

So what kind of idiot would want to place high taxes on our most productive people?

Go with a flat tax on all income over a basic cost of living amount. By all income it means all income, dividends, to salary, sales of goods ( profit) etc

Absolutely fair in that case.

I would love to see a wealth tax on every dollar over ten million.

That would only start to be fair.

You didn't explain why that would be fair?

Because we want the road to continue to exist, not have potholes, to not have the road controlled by a local gang who is simply trying to get enough to eat, and for people to get to work to afford even better roads and more prosperity.

Progressive taxes is probably not always fair, but its what works and I would rather have something that works than nothing that is completely hypothetically fair.

You didn't explain why that would be fair?

Because it would mean that as the wealthiest country to ever exist we would start to care about the average citizen over those who have accumulated huge amounts of wealth.
