Now, that is a stupid statement. Are you one of those folks that stereotypes me, just because I'm black? Please, tell me you're not. Black dudes can't listen to Merle Haggard? That's reserved for the white boys? I can bust with some Robert Johnson. How's that for a Southron culuhed bahwee?
Take time to get your foot out of your mouth, if you need.
2. I didn't read every post, but a lot, and it seems that a lot of folks don't really know what intelligent profiling is. It's not just visual. It's looking at several different factors and then determining whether a person should have a further look - when was ticket purchased (last minute), was it paid for in cash, is it one-way, how much luggage, personal background, etc. This is what we should be doing rather than the random nonsense we do today (at least in the USA)
Of course you can listen to Myrle Haggard. I'm just surprised that anyone (particularly a purported black person who is active in politics) has never heard of Mos Def, despite his incredibly influential role in hip hop, his acting career, his political involvement, etc.
At the very least, I would have thought you would have known about his views on Islam and 9/11, because that would have given you another evil liberal terrorist-sympathizer to demonize.
Jumping into the thread late -
Some thoughts -
1. I flew through Amsterdam to Detroit about 2 weeks ago and I'm wondering how this guy got on board. Security in Amsterdam is at the gate and pretty intense - questioning, metal detectors, rather thorough patdowns for everyone. Something went wrong with the process.

3. Now it's likely that we're going to over-react and implement stupid procedures (like removing shoes) that will hassle everyone and accomplish very little. Rather depressing for those of us who travel frequently.
Nobody is opposed to this. What we're opposed to is the "electrocute all Muslims who have the temerity to try to board planes" approach espoused by people like apdst.
Good post! Profiling is used all the time, and is useful. Racial, or religious, or ethnic profiling is not useful.

Also, welcome to DP! Nice to meetcha :2wave:
Thanks for the welcome!
I'm another Whistlestopper refugee.

But, hey, I'm black. I guess th next stupid assumption you're gonna make is that I don't work for a living.
But, like, or not, it's a part of it.
No, because unlike you, I don't attribute negative characteristics to entire racial or religious groups based on the actions of a few people.
Well, then, you've led a seriousy sheltered life! When you get another 15 years under your belt, you'll see what I'm talking about.
I used to think like that...then I grew up.
No, it's not. I'm surprised to see you say that. It's already been demonstrated in this thread that it is impossible, for example, to spot the 'Muslim'. There's no facts to back up the assertion that stopping members of a single race will help catch a person bent on violence. Stopping every member of a racial group will make screening as useless as the current no-fly list. What is needed is whittling down numbers to manageable, useful levels for further screening or attention.
What you are advocating will make us less safe, not more.
I think Right is not the one who's led the sheltered life
Yes, it is. If you see a white guy named Bob Johnson, with an Americanpasspor travelling from Nigeria to Detoit with a one way ticket and no luggage, you're not going to pay it as much mind as you would if Mustaffa Muhammed did the same thing. Just reality, dude.

So let's say you see a black guy with a name like Bob Johnson with an American passport traveling from Nigeria to Detroit with a one way ticket and no luggage. Would you say we should ignore that too? The only difference between that guy and your example is black v. white, while the only difference between that guy and this bomber was the name.
Are you really arguing that we should base our security procedures on someone's name? That's just asinine.
Yes, if only I were 15 years older, I'd know that I'm insufficiently bigoted.

One way, international flight, no luggage, travelling alone - that guy's getting triple screened, no matter if his name is Mary Sue or if he's green.
If the black Bob Johnson has an American passport and conducts himslf well, I'm not going to pay him as much attention, no.
Are you saying that we need to swamp Bob an ignore Muhommed? There's assinin for ya's. No, wait, that's just stupid.
Oh! Now, I'm biggoted. Gee whiz! Should I report that post? Oh, wait, you're a mod, it would be a waste of time.

Ok, I'm game. But, let's not let the Liberalism tke over and screen Mary Sue, while we smile and stamp Mustaffa Mohammed righ on through, just because we're scared ****less of being accused of racism.
