It's not so much what you eat, but how much; and there are some foods that keep you filled up for longer periods. It's simple math really... if you burn "X" calories daily and you consume "X" + "Y" + "Z, you're going to gain weight. If you want to lose weight, instead of eating something, have a cup of water; it's not rocket science, and it's none of Obama's business how much, or what we consume, so long as it's a legal foodstuff.

The National Conference of State Legislatures reported last month that states were facing combined budget deficits of more than $40 billion in 2009. Raising cigarette taxes is one way some states are trying to make up the shortfall. In 2007, states collected more than $19 billion in cigarette taxes

The federal government, meantime, collects nearly $7 billion annually in cigarette excise taxes and would have raised those taxes, effective this year, but for the presidential veto of the S-chip legislation, which House Democrats have said is near the top of their agenda for next year.

Omar Little’s hometown, Baltimore, does not collect city taxes on cigarettes, but some municipalities do, for a total of up to $600 million a year.

But taxes are not the only government revenue from cigarettes. Settlements in the late 1990s to end state lawsuits against tobacco companies mean that the cigarette industry is paying states nearly $250 billion over 25 years. Under the agreement, those payments to states will continue flowing even beyond 25 years as long as the tobacco industry is healthy. But the payments would phase out as cigarette company profits decline and would ultimately disappear if people stop smoking.

All the states are counting on that settlement money for years to come, but losing it would be a particular problem for 17 states that have borrowed against their tobacco settlement money by issuing tobacco securitization bonds.

They government's food pyramid has failed epically, causing greater problems, and more obesity and heart disease... which is typical for government. They put their finger in something they have no business doing, and create a huge problem, which of course only more government can fix... Go to hell I say. Michelle, take your salad bars and shove them.

If she wanted to do something constructive, then tell the nation, THE GOVERNMENT WAS WRONG, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT, EAT WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT. The only thing you should watch for is you don't eat too much. Period.

Literacy is important because you need to be able to read to have a modicum of success in life. I don't recall her saying read anything specific, just read. And if this is an arm of the Federal government... shut it down. Let the private sector fund this too.

In fact, let's scrub the Education Dept. and return this to the states and their localities. It's another Carter era behemoth that's been the creator and guardian of failure, watching over the demise of American Education.

What would we do without these failing departments? We'd be doing far better.

My point is, is every First Lady has gotten a cause and this seems to be the first time anyone bitched about it like it was actually hurting us.

You want to know what would be a better solution than getting rid of departments that put these standards out there? Get rid of half the **** rotting our brains in the first place. There is no correlation to federal government controlled education and "illteracy". In fact, in the third smartest country in the world, Japan, the Japanese government gives a set of guidelines, and will only allow secondary schools (colleges) to function if they meet their strict and very high standards.

South Korea which is probably the smartest or close to smartest country in the world has a centralized education system as well that concentrates greatly on math and science. So your arguement isn't there.

Nancy Reagan couldn't do anything without being bitched about. Hillary Clinton was bitched about for HillaryKare, first by the right, then by the left after they got demolished in the midterms. Then she got really, really quiet and went back to baking cookies and boning up on those 900 raw FBI files of political enemies.

Our federal government has overseen the demise of our school system for 4 decades. The correlation couldn't be clearer. Send it back the the states and their localities. Smaller, more accountable places; you know... places no bigger than Japan or SK. Let them run their experiments, let them compete... because the feds have instituted catastrophic failure.

Nearly every single country in the world that ranks higher than United States in terms of education has one central department, the rest at the very least have a central delegation. So try again.
