"Using kids as the backdrop for his gun control speech, the President claimed his commitment to young ones," Palin wrote. "The hypocrisy of it all, however, is that while the President publicly acknowledges the value of “even one life” when it advances his own political agenda, he fails to acknowledge as much when it comes to protecting the lives of children soon to be born."

Palin continues: "See, his commitment to our children is selective. When children in the womb are on the chopping block, the President is silent. When he places the Second Amendment, however, on the chopping block, children are his focus. Never mind the fact that his latest proposals would not protect them from evildoers and would, in fact, leave responsible, law-abiding citizens less able to protect them as well ... Clearly, there is no shortage of hypocrisy coming out of Washington, and this is just one example."

This is the real question. What is wrong with American politics such that a subliterate morally obtuse MILF can wind up on a presidential ticket of the GOP?

The partial answer is that the US has the rightwing noise machine -- a loose confederation of rightwing think tanks funded by billionaires, talking heads like Limbaugh, attack websites like Breitbart, and Fox News, all spewing out rightwing memes and counterfactual narratives. This machine now dominates conservatism and the Republican party. Most normal thinking Republican politicians can't placate the machine by providing the nonsensical arguments and cretinous soundbites it requires. But Palin can. Bachmann can. Santorum can. That's why I'm certain one of them will be the next GOP candidate for president, and with that the Republican party will finally devolve into a bizarre marginal crank movement it was destined to become.

I've sort of concluded that Palin let loose the floodgate of tea party knownothingism and thus is the person most responsible for the ultimate decline and death of the GOP. Certainly Rove thinks that. He can't stand Palin and he knows he helped create her by bringing the tea party cranks and religious right into the GOP fold in order to win an election or too.
