Instant powdered booze, just add water. Good idea, bad idea or no idea?

The federal government admitted Monday that its recent approval of Palcohol—a powdered alcohol which turns water into vodka and rum—was actually done in “error.”

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau granted Palcohol “label approval” on April 8 only to withdraw it 13 days later. “TTB did approve labels for Palcohol,” it said in a statement. “Those label approvals were issued in error and have since been surrendered.”

Palcohol’s parent company Lipsmark said in a statement that “there seemed to be a discrepancy on our fill level, how much powder is in the bag” and that the approvals were surrendered on the afternoon of April 21. “This doesn’t mean that Palcohol isn’t approved,” it said. “It just means that these labels aren’t approved. We will re-submit labels.” Palcohol will have to resubmit labels for approval to the bureau, which is part of the Department of Treasury.

The government had originally approved various types of Palcohol—ranging from lemon drops to cosmopolitans. Various news outlets noted the approval of the product more than a week later, when it began covering the science and safety of the powdered drink.

And with good reason, as powdered alcohol has the potential to be a public health nightmare. Beyond the fact that it’s easy for underage drinkers to use discreetly, the potential for users to snort it is serious business. Snorting alcohol is dangerous because it’s quickly absorbed, and users get intoxicated immediately. People have already tried snorting liquid alcohol, and that can cause damage to nasal passages.

What if you ate the powder? Snort it, ugh.

Would be good for storage, to stock up on and for backpacking. If only they had a Whiskey...

Since the user controls the "proof" (% alcohol by volume) is it sold/taxed as beer, wine or distilled spirits? ;)

I heard it would take a half a packet to make up a drink and it would take that amount to get any kind of "hit", people are not really going to snort that amount :lamo

It's already on sale in other countries, btw.

i might give it a try if it hits the shelves. i find it kind of interesting.

No biggie. Rather have the real thing.

That's like making Tang when you have orange juice in the fridge, or jerking off when your horny girlfriend is in the next room.

Very good point

Cool, I am thinking of a fuel. I wonder what it's energy density is?
or it's shelve life?
Could you store it in your car in it's powered form, and add water if you need gas?
Do they bind it to something to make it a powder?

Is the binder toxic?

also interesting. essentially a non volatile fuel.

Legality wise... No problem for me.

In practice I don't see it catching on... I can't see it being any good.

Me too.

What might be the pros...take up less storage room. No glass bottles to break on the way home from the supermarket. Easily portable. Every one of us climbed into the transport last week with a champagne bottle and the (still full) bottles were rolling about the floor at one point. Kids could smuggle this into expensive venues much easier than now. Not that I would be doing that :lamo

Cons? It wouldn't look as pretty. Might be tricky to mix. Might not taste as good. Some fruitbats will try to abuse it, but the company said it shouldn't work as volume is impractical so...

To be fair I do have a Keurig... Well then...

What's a Keurig? Nevermind, I'll go look it up, just exposing my own ... well I don't know yet, perhaps outdatedness? I'll go find out.

On edit: A coffee machine? Huh, I wonder how that compares to this, it's not like coffee hasn't usually been in some sort of solid form til brewed. This powdered alcohol is definitely a new way to present alcoholic beverages.

From all the trials and experience reports I've read, it's neither as palatable as liquid alcohol nor does it have the same bodily effect. You need more of the powder to get the same effect as the liquid. Addicts won't care though.

When I go out dancing I usually take electrolyte powder with me in case I start to feel drained. If this powdered alcohol becomes popular and venues start banning powders, then people like me will be SOL.

Not to mention, the irony of a snortable form of alcohol is really blatant.

I'll bet it tastes terrible.

i understand early powdered coffee was horrible

Instant coffee? I can't stand that stuff. Just something about powdered alcohol sounds gross.

Can they make it taste like real beer? That's the big question.

They need to make an unflavored version. Rohypnol is getting expensive.

I doubt I'd try the stuff. I don't drink to get wasted, I drink because I enjoy the flavor... and I'm pretty picky about what I will and will not drink. Love a good wine, hate beer; love SouthernComfort straight, hate vodka, gin, rum straight and am not into sicky sweet alcoholic mixed drinks. All I can think about is "instant" coffee, and how it's like choking down liquid mud compared to a smooth, strong, freshly brewed cup of Joe. I suspect this powdered alcohol has the same problem.
