Pakistan has taken the landmark decision to allow transsexuals to have their own gender category on some official documents.
BBC News - Pakistan allows transsexuals to have own gender category
Very out of character for Pakistan indeed! But at last, a step towards a civil society.
Most pro-2nd amendment people agree that registration is a prelude to confiscation because the only purpose registration serves is a list of who has what so that the government knows which door to be knocking on when it wants to confiscate firearms. Now wouldn't it be a bad idea to basically tell a middle eastern government you like to pretend to be a gender your are not as well as give them your address and other important info?

The way you describe transgendered people shows a total lack of understanding how they actually feel and conduct themselves.
I see the need for concern, though. Hopefully Pakistan isn't up to something sinister.

Not really, at the surface it may seem good, but to my knowledge alot of middle eastern countries allow transgendered people only because they hate homosexuality so much, they would rather you change your sex, then to be homosexual. I watched a documentary on trans people in Iran, and it's quite sad, because alot of people go through the process when they don't suffer from GID, just so they can be with who they want.
Whoa... That is a big step for them, but I am not sure if that's the best thing to do or to let them claim the gender they identify with..
james has no idea about transgenderism. He just spews uninformed nastiness.
I agree. This is EXTREMELY progressive for a Muslim country.
which is why it makes no sense......i don't understand this at all. it makes no sense on it's face, and i wouldn't fall for it, were i transgendered or otherwise.

Pakistan has also twice elected Benazir Bhutto as Prime Minister. She is a woman. Muslim countries often do not fit our stereotypes.

How did that work out? Oh I remember now...
The acts of a few people is not the same thing as a country that could, not once but twice, elect her to office.

Seriously the COUNTRY elected her and a group of idiots killed her. Think before you post!
Redress, it's one thing to say that a country is accepting of certain candidates, it's another to say that it's progressive because of their election. Acceptance and progression are not the same thing. Soviet Russia was accepting of Jews. Progressive in regards to their rights and benefits? Not really. A society like that of Pakistan's is anything BUT progressive and this move doesn't prove that they're moving in the right direction. While you see the supposed 'recognition' of transgendered people as something to be praised, I see it as nothing more than the creation of a list for future oppression. Countries and political parties who have a proven track record of racism, homophobia, antisemitism etc. with nothing to show in terms of support for their rights should be carefully examined in situations such as this one.
Did I refer to Pakistan as progressive? I said they often do not fit our stereotypes for them. This is a large, unsubtle difference. Straw men are still weak debate tactics.
