ABC News: Officials Weigh Booing Ban at High School Games

March 4, 2007 — From brawls on professional basketball courts to out-of-control parents at Little League games, unsportsmanlike behavior can be a problem.

Now, some high school sporting officials in Washington state are considering tough new rules — including a ban on booing.

Oh good grief. First their papers and tests can't be marked in red because it might hurt their self esteem, now this?

Sorry, but negative things happen in the real world. Sheltering kids from negative things (like booing) isn't going to help them when they leave school.

This kind of thing only serves to keep kids soft. I say, let kids learn that life isn't always fair and can be tough while they develop into adults, or else they will be wimps and crybabies forever.(I will now be checking myself into rehab for offending wimps and crybabies)

I don't think the booing ban is designed to protect kids' feelings, but to protect the referees. When the booing escalates into violence, it isn't good for anybody. While I do think banning booing would be a violation of the free speech amendment, I wish parents would set a better example for their children.

I hear ya. I agree that violence isn't a good thing, and that more parents need to be setting good examples for their kids. But remember, it's not just the parents booing, it's the players' peers as well.

Stuff like this stems from the whole self esteem boosting movement. It seems like you can't turn around these days without finding some new thing that schools are doing in order to preserve students' self esteem. And while that in and of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, there's a point where what they propose and/or implement is just ridiculous and over the top. Kids DO need to learn about disappointment, failure, and all that other stuff too. The real world isn't going to cushion their feelings or their self esteem, so there's got to be a limit to how much the schools do. Too much cushioning is just setting our kids up for failure and a HUGE hit to their self esteem once they join the adult ranks and things aren't rainbows and flowers anymore.

Kid's these days have too much self-confidence. banning Booing? Come on, let's ban cheering too? Afterall, cheering from one side makes the other side feel bad.:roll: Stupid.

And civility and good sportsmanship. The main purpose of school sports is supposed be about learning sportsmanship. So while I don't think booing should be banned, I think parents and school officials should monitor events and do their part to discourage it.

I am all for doing what we can to help kids with their self esteem. Doing what this article is suggesting, does not enhance self esteem. Enhancing it is often accomplished by understanding ways to feel good about yourself even when faced with adversity. Making one feel good about situations by eliminating adversity does nothing for self esteem. It creates a personality that is unable to deal with life's challenges (never having the experience in dealing with them) and can cause narcissism. There are far better ways to help our kids with self esteem then removing all obstacles, challenges, and adversity.

BTW, I have no idea how this issue has anything to do with 'left wing'. So far every 'left winger' that has posted on this thread has come out against the article's proposal.

Either A) Seattle has no other issues to discuss about; or B) the politicians can't risk discussing anything else and find this for their re-election campaigns. or C) HOA mentality within the PTA have gotten way way out of hand in over-reaching.

It's actually supposed to be about learning the values of teamwork, hardwork, and willingness to sacrifice. Good sportsmanship is more of a side benefit.

I have a theory, it's based on the assumption that booing is "politically incorrect" the theory of politically correct behavior and language is inarguably an ideal from the left side of the isle. That being said, since booing could "hurt someone's feelings" it is now offensive apparantly and thus not p.c., therefore, the logical leap being made is to assign it to the left. Just trying to be helpful.
BTW, it doesn't really matter to me which ideology led to the debate on booing at events, it's still a stupid idea.
