Obama: Election Day should be a holiday [W:21]

Re: Obama: Election Day should be a holiday

I've been wishing for Obama to shut his face for years and yet the **** continues to run his mouth. I have no doubt a large part of the population is sick and tired of him and wants nothing more than for him shut his face.

Yep, most of em look like this,

You cant MAKE it a holiday. Are they going to force businesses to close? Force people not to work?

Re: Obama: Election Day should be a holiday

I have hated the ever increasing "early" voting notions. Not out of some idea of voter suppression, but I believe that unless there are significant circumstances necessitating the need for early voting (you're in school so will be unable to get to your local polling place, you're deployed over seas, etc), it is in the best interest of the Republican that individuals take in the information and campaigning of all candidates through the entire process. That early voting sets up the greater potential for people to be snookered and wrongfully manipulated into casting their vote.

However, I LOVE the idea of making election day a holiday. I would prefer more people voting than less in a general sense, and having the day off just further removes that impediment.

I'd actually go a step further. I'd prefer to see it...if at least for federal employees and I'd love to find a way to transition it into the private sector...that you setup voter ID cards to be "marked" by an official stamp if you go to a polling place, and such proof of voting would need to be shown for you to be paid your holiday pay for that day. Otherwise, it would simply have been a day with LWOP.

I'd also be fine with removing Columbus Day from the current role of Federal Holidays, thus allowing a neutral impact as it relates to the costs of holidays across a year.

You cant MAKE it a holiday. Are they going to force businesses to close? Force people not to work?

Actually you CAN make it a holiday.

You can't make businesses act in any specific way about a holiday.

I don't know if you realize this, but there are multiple FEDERAL holidays. IE, the GOVERNMENT has "made" a holiday.

Some businesses don't provide any incentive or issue for working on those day. Others will close the office and provide paid leave. Others still will offer premium pay of some type for working it. Others will change up hours or other such things to deal with it.

I'm not suggesting that you should make it a federal holiday and FORCE businesses to give everyone that day off. I'm suggesting simply that I'd support making it a federal holiday, and the various private businesses can do as they see fit.

But yes, the government absolutely CAN make a holiday, and have done so numerous times in the past. Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Presidents Day, etc.

As long as it is an unpaid holiday and people can not mail it ballots and have to show up with their IDs, checked against a universal real time data base, I might favor it.

Election Day should be a holiday. I love this idea.

Hmmm....does he think more people will vote if it's a national holiday? Most people I know look forward to doing fun things with the family or friends on holidays, not standing in line at the polling places. They should make absentee ballots easy to use all over the country.

I guess if I'd ever had to wait in a long line, I'd feel differently, but I like voting on election day. (Everybody I know votes early.)

There should not be a holiday for voting, and I say that as someone who generally supports Republicans, the likely beneficiaries of such a change. As it stands now, conservatives are at a turnout disadvantage because of work and family responsibilities. Nevertheless, if someone is sufficiently patriotic and cares about the direction of his community, state, and nation, he should make an effort to vote. Between early voting, absentee ballots, expanded election day hours, and lunch breaks, I think people can find the time to vote. It's a question of motivation.

I love voting on election day, especially the big ones (primary, general). On primary day almost every Republican candidate showed up at my polling place. Plus I love the excitement and noise and media coverage. It's like a happening to me.

I think they should give every voter a million dollar lottery ticket and the draw to be held after the electoral college speaks its verdict.

Just look at the line ups for lotteries and it could easily be at polling booths and to the benefit of everyone because with more people voting, everyone is a winner.

Calm

They can DECLARE it a holiday. It doesnt MAKE it a holiday. Making something so requires force.

Hah, thats actually pretty brilliant. I bet people would even figure out how to get a voter ID for that.

Election Day should be a holiday. I love this idea.

If voting was mandatory in the United States most Republicans would lose their elections
If voting was made easier for all voters many Republicans would lose their elections.
If voting was made more difficult no Republicans would lose their elections.
