If I was the President of the United States, I bet I could convince people to get behind me and support replacing the American Bald Eagle with a turkey as the U.S. National emblem. The same goes for Trump's wall. He brings the NBPC representatives to Washington to say what he wants them to say, not what the majority of their union believes. As you can see, there is a lot more to this story than just a few Border Patrol agents say "we need a wall" then others say "we need more security and a fence in vulnerable area where it's needed".

WASHINGTON — President Trump has called for a wall along the border with Mexico to stop undocumented immigrants and drugs from entering the United States. But Border Patrol agents on the front lines say they need more technology and additional personnel to curb the illegal traffic, according to a report released on Thursday by Democrats on the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

The report was based on internal Customs and Border Protection documents from the 2017 fiscal year. It concluded that less than one half of 1 percent of the agents’ suggestions to secure the Southwest border mentioned the need for a wall.


The documents show that the Border Patrol identified what it called 902 “capability gaps,” or vulnerabilities, on the Southwest border. The word “wall” was suggested as a possible solution for just three of those gaps.

The NBPC position regarding walls and fences is not due to a concern of losing our jobs if fences and walls are built. On the contrary, the NBPC realizes that walls and fences require just as much manpower to protect them. Border Patrol Agents witness what happens to walls and fences when there are not enough Border Patrol agents to protect them.

One of many things that kills me about this whole stupid debacle. A wall will only accomplish its goal with monitoring all along it, which requires a huge expenditure on new infrastructure, personnel, supply chains, etc., all along the length.Otherwise, they'll just cross where there isn't said monitoring. And even then, it'd only stop 25% of illegals from arriving. Most likely, that would only be temporary as alternate routes (ie, by water) are worked out.

The whole thing breathtakingly absurd.




If people really cared about illegal immigration, they'd be demanding we focus on their reason for coming here, not on a wall & deport policy. Ramped up nationwide e-verify, allocation of a whole bunch more resources to enforcing against employers, ramping up penalties on employers such that the risk of being caught with illegals employed cannot be considered a cost of business. I'm sure we could come up with more if people really cared to think about it. If they can't get work here, they'll not be coming here to try to take anyone's job. They'll be genuine asylum seekers.

But no, they need to demand a big stupid wall while not being honest about what it would require to make it work, just so they can manufacture an issue to wield against Democrats who, as they like to point out, have allocated money for border security. If they demand a wall, their wishes are less likely to be granted. Thus, they can always attack "the left" dishonestly about supposedly wanting open borders. Only a few fools truly want that.

If the risk of death in an arduous journey across a desert isn't going to deter someone, a mere wall will be the least of their concerns. If the GOP really wants a wall, they need to be honest about what it will cost to adequately monitor/patrol such that it really does work.

Otherwise, you know, things like ladders, tunnels, catapults, ropes, and the like have existed for a very long time.




And remember: only about 25% of them cross at the southern border. The vast majority are visa overstays.

Your article surveying agents in two busy sectors doesn't rebut list of priorities in the New York Times article. There's a whole lot which needs done. Increased stretches of wall only addresses a small part of it. Trump needs to show he's serious about comprehensive reform ... as opposed to being willing to make Americans homeless and unable to afford food or medication all for a dollar figure that he pulled out of his ass for something he promised we wouldn't have to pay for.

Doesn't matter what he said in December, it's January and he has changed his mind at least twice since he made that statement. He wants a 'wall', not a fence, not a see-through beautiful concrete filled steel beams, he wants a wall, a concrete wall. Democrats passed legislation the day they took control of the House that offered $1.3 billion for border security, including physical barriers and technology along the U.S. southern border. Last year, the Congress voted yes on a bill to give him 1.6 billion for his wall. That money has yet to be spent, it's sitting somewhere, unspent.
