In a shocking display of fealty to a foreign potentate, President Obama bowed to Saudi King Abdullah at the Group of 20 summit in London last week.

Mr. Obama later said in Strasbourg, France, "We have to change our behavior in showing the Muslim world greater respect." Symbolism is important in world affairs. By bending over to show greater respect to Islam, the U.S. president belittled the power and independence of the United States.

The bow was an extraordinary protocol violation. Such an act is a traditional obeisance befitting a king's subjects, not his peer. There is no precedent for U.S. presidents bowing to Saudi or any other royals. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt shook hands with Saudi King Abdulaziz in February 1945. Granted, Mr. Roosevelt was wheelchair-bound, but former President Dwight D. Eisenhower shook hands when he first met King Saud in January 1957. Mr. Obama's bow to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques does not help his image with those who believe he is secretly a Muslim, and why he chose to bow only to the Saudi King and not to any other royals remains unexplained.

No Americans of any station are required to bow to royalty.

King Abdullah isn't "scum" and this may have been a gaffe, but jeeze, let's let it be. Putting your arm around someone isn't "assault" and the queen did it back, even though it might have been a breach of protocol.

I don't agree with his policies, but Barack is generally improving our image abroad. Whereas Bush's trips to Europe would be greeted with flag burnings and anti-American rhetoric, Obama is garnering respect. Let's give him credit where it's due instead of focusing on his gaffes.

For whatever reason, I hadn't viewed the footage of the bow (although part of the reason is that NONE of the news programs I watch on TV have addressed it), but I just viewed it now. I saw yesterday that the White House was denying it was a bow. Come on. It looked like a bow.

That does not change my mind about how stupid this whole discussion is. It does, however, bother me that Obama would let these small-minded people who claim it was such a disgrace (said in sarcasm) that he bowed get to him enough to respond to it to the point of possibly lying. He needs to think, "WHO FRIGGEN CARES what these people think" and move on. He's above this.

EDIT : As for the 'poll' (and that term is being used loosely) : I've heard that he is really only 6% kenyan, and a mix of other cultures (predominently white)... does that make him any less 'american'... well, not if he WAS born in Kenya, but that's irrellevent. How does an 'american' act?? I can promise you that if you had audience with any royalty, YOU would be made to bow, so does that make you less American? It's part of a bigger picture that in my opinion is developing here with Obama, his world apology tour, his seeming lack of interest in American interests, and his naivety, all seem to be setting a stage for disaster. This bow, they are now lying about and calling not a bow, is just a symptom of the disease .
