Not only are the family members of MAGA disowning them, some of their marriages are ending too.

does no one understand "compartmentalization"? how do you lose a marriage over politics?
My ex was not a Trump fn. so we didn't talk about it.. this is not a difficult concept to use

I did lose a couple FB friends over politics, but they were "extremists":rolleyes: in the real world though? get a grip

My experience exactly. I am also much more assertive here than in real life. As you say, in the main because this place is set up for that. Religion and politics are hot topics. I will say 9 out of 10 it is the annoying, persistent religious person I am likely to run into. But I usually sense them from miles away and humour them with smiles and polite dissent. But even such encounters are few. The agitated political activist is actually rarer. I say it is online I run into that. Again because online is set up for that.

Agree. If you know someone since they were toddlers then you know there's more to them than the fleeting political fad of the day.

By "studies" you mean "study" by a center-right think tank -- AEI. Their study was distilled to one item which you didn't even bother to highlight. This isn't exactly "many examples."

Did it occur to you that those on the left are likely less crazy than trump supporters? (We're not the ones wearing tea bags, diapers, ear bandages, etc.) I can see why a trump supporter would have more left-leaning friends.

And when Trump showed up that's exactly the direction he took off in.

If I supported the subjugation of my wife and our female relatives and loved ones, I expect that she'd leave me with the quickness and with no shortage of acrimony. When we got together, we used to have cute dinner discussions about, "Well, we pretty much agree politically, but if we didn't, we'd work through it." Nope. Can't work through this shit. When it's "You either do or do not want me to be subjugated. Which is it?", my answer is no, I do not want that shit. **** that in the ear sideways with a phone pole. Hard pass.

According to Trump supporters everywhere including here, I eat babies, drink their blood, want 100 percent open borders and DAILY full term post-birth abortion on DEMAND, I run a child sex slave ring in my basement, I love communism, I want my furry child to have a litter box in the classroom, which is taught by a drag queen, I'm "the real racist", I hate America, I want forced Marxism taught from cradle to grave, I want to be referred to by some random pronoun and ..... have I forgotten anything?

My half brother and I don’t speak.
He’s 52 lives in a small town that’s compromised of 99% white people and has become very paranoid. He’ll send bizarre. texts about how “he’s ready to fight in Biden’s ground war when they invade”
I tell him that no one is going to be invading Oregon, Illinois.
He believes in just about every Hairbrained conspiracy theory ala Alex Jones.
I can’t even avoid politics in conversation.
The whole situation is very sad.

I also remember the hysteria around someone spotting a large amount of caskets at a military installation, or some other government facility, that drove the CT-right into a massive frenzy that they were for American citizens that were anti-Obama. They absolutely lost their effing minds the entire time Obama was president. Subliminal guilt?

It can't be ruled out.
As if anything Kamala Harris would do would even be anywhere as heinous as a convicted felon president with the SCOTUS con majority in his back pocket to let him get away with virtually anything, and they've basically said so.
 
I am estranged from about 2/3rds of my late wife's family because of politics, especially since June 16th, 2015.

Some of it began when I was still a happily registered Republican when I started receiving and rejecting racist and bigoted themed e-mails and postings form them during the Obama years.

They didn't like that even then I was a fact checker and not a racist and would respond with factual corrections and non goose stepping to the marches they were playing.

I have lost some friends and members of my late wife's family because they went head first down the Trump rabbit hole.

Her family members were running to her whining about me when I would call out their garbage, they had learned they couldn't get their shit by me.

It was a testy situation for a while, I even canceled my Facebook account for a couple years to let it all cool down.

The same thing happened on other Political Forums I was on when folks I had been friends with for years turned on me, nastily, when I wouldn't tow the Republican hate Obama and then the Republican love Trump lines.

That is a large part of the reason I received a 1,000 Year time out from the Hannity Forum.

I became too much of a burr under each of the Mod's saddles when I wouldn't tow the hate Democrats love Republicans line.

I've previously posted several links showing both divorce rates and relationship ending rates have gone through the roof between 2016 and 2020. In typical MAGA fashion they called me out and my links shut them up. All the guy does is preach hate. And now we get 4 more years of it.
