No phones in the classroom.

Roughly 31 states are no longer permitting students to have cell phones out in the classroom. Surprise!!!!!!! The reports are almost all positive!!!!!! Kids are more engaged in the lesson, with the instructor and with each other. Already schools are reporting positive results in classwork. The nice thing, it's not just conservative states doing this, it's all over the nation. Just over 2 decades ago schools decided phones were OK in the school, in the classroom, and those phones hurt the educational process with kids texting, viewing Utube videos, watching "influencers", and cheating on their lessons, just to name a few of the activities. I recall speaking about this numerous times with educators and predicting it would lead to trouble. Lo and behold!!!!!!!! I was actually told by some teachers how great it would be and one dared to tell me than now kids didn't need to memorize information, they could just look it up on their phones. A teacher told me this! Crazy huh?
So glad to see us trying to take steps steps to regain our schools, and our lost years from Covid's mistakes.

I feel like I can't believe it had to come to this, it should have been a rule a very long time ago. Enabling a kid's addiction to their phone is not setting them up for success in life. From what I hear from my teen, it's not uncommon for a lot of kids to sit out the lesson on their phone - a couple of my nephews always seemed to be having issues about phone usage in class these past couple of years. But now the teachers have the power again to not allow them out in class, I can see why the initial reports are positive.

I’m not object to students retaining possession of their phones during the day.

I think a good rule of thumb should be that *if* a student has their phone out during class, the teacher confiscates the phone and the student has to retrieve it from the office at the end of the day…with a call going to the parent that it’s a one time warning. Next time phone is out during class, there would be a detention or other penalty. 3rd offense and a student loses the ability to have a phone on their person, period.

Past time to implement such standards. We have it here now, and IIRC Kentucky just started with using pouches that you must put up against a magnet which are located around the school to make open.

So they still have their phone on them, just need to access a magnet to get to it if need be.

Although we didn't have teachers telling us we were all welcome. So there is that.

Many state laws (policies?) prevent student cellphone use “during school hours”, not simply while in the classroom.

The legislation allows students to use their cell phones outside of school hours, so students will be able to contact their parents about extracurricular activities and other issues as necessary, Woods said.

Comal ISD is following state law House Bill 1481 from the 89th Legislative Session, prohibiting students from using personal communication devices while on school property during the school day effective August 19, the first day of school for the 2025-2026 school year. This includes all instructional time, lunch, and hallway passing periods, from the first bell to dismissal.

I was being a bit, but just a bit, sarcastic. I absolutely think that that children should not be allowed to use phones in classrooms unless the teacher is having them use it as a research tool but I get why American parents are fearful for their children in the classroom.

Yep - some local public districts here have started using those locked bags.

Sadly, I think schools resort to those type of policies because they don’t have parents that actually PARENT their kids and make sure their kids abide rules and boundaries.

Sad really. But we can’t force people to parent

Last night took an UBER home, and in conversation, our driver happened to be a retired teacher. She said part of the reason she took retirement after her 30 years I think she said, was in part to dealing with phones in the classroom.

Said it was such a distraction and taking away from her being able to teach effectively. Had enough and been driving UBER for about 9 years.
