No kidding half of all U.S. farm workers are undocumented

Democrats are very protective about keeping their impoverished labor force in place. Isn't this the same argument they made in civil war days "If you free the slaves, who will pick the cotton?"

How do you think those workers that are about to be deported will be replaced?
The US has a limited supply of people willing to do those jobs and that number will be decimated.

Produce will rot in fields and prices will go up.
That will happen.

That's your argument for slavery?

That you don't want to pay farm workers a living wage?

**** that; the price of your big mac will go up ten cents, and everyone will still be fine. And thousands of farm workers will get higher wages.

Where did I say anything about slavery?
I'm obviously against that as is everyone who isn't completely bonkers.

I'm saying if Trump reports millions of people many of whom work in the agricultural sector then that sector is screwed.
There won't be enough Americans left who are willing to do those jobs even if the farmers pay more.

I don't actually like McDonalds.

It'll be fine. Wages will rise. Food will still be grown and sold. Your argument didn't fly in 1850 and it doesn't fly now.

Crops will still get harvested, no one will starve. It'll be fine, and better than abusing desperate people by paying them low wages for hard manual labor, while they are too scared to complain.

If the US has lets say 500k workers in fields now and let's say 350k are deported then either the work they were doing won't get done or they weren't doing anything anyway.

I'm all for paying farm workers more money but this about the work that won't get done and the knock-on from that.
People simply won't be in fields to gather the produce so it won't be gathered.
This isn't a hypothetical it's what will happen.

I'd like to know who is going to sort through the recycling considering they have to sort through people actually dropping off their bags of rotting garbage. I can't see anyone that I know that would do such a job.

Fair enough, but if you had been around here longer you would know I would never consider Trump any kind of genius. I guess sarcasm can be hard to seen if you don't know the poster.
from the 1st post: 'at that point if you want to call Trump a "genius" ironically'
sarcastically is what I meant by ironically.
Sorry if it wasn't clear

I don't know how farmers will handle it but they will figure out how to get their crops to market. Necessity is the mother of innovation. Your making a specious argument to defend the bigotry in your position.

There is no bigotry involved just cold hearted math about the lack of people to do the work needed to bring in the crops.

All the soon to be fired burecrats can pick the crops

Farmers and corporate farmers are all democrats now? People who want cheap food are all democrats now?

Sure, just take those fired CDC scientists and FAA employees and move them to the fields of the California. Makes total sense.

Did our resident genius in the Whitehouse as of tomorrow even think of this when he's vowed to deport all undocumented people? Damn will we be able to by chickens and eggs even if we can afford them? How about other farm products?

73% of US farm labor are migrants. The USDA estimates that half are undocumented. Given the significance, why is this overlooked by conservative rural America?

It hasn't or ever was overlooked by rural America. For decades family farms fought off Big Agra and their paid representatives in Congress writing regulations to destroy them. The vast-vast-vast number of family farms in rural America absolutely vanished between 1970-1990s.
Most farms today are 5 times the size of the smaller family farms that existed throughout America.
They need seasonal workers to harvest. There are not enough Americans who are willing to do this work because the government pays them not to work.
Another reason there should be work requirements for medicaid and welfare for able bodied recipients

If it ends slave labor in this country it is a price we must pay. These people need to be documented and be here legally. They also must be paid a decent wage. No matter what it cost. I buy most of my food from local farmers who do not use illegal workers and the price seems reasonable affordable to me. All this illegal slave labor needs to end yesterday.

You think they don't use illegal workers and or assume they are paid decently

Some Canadian legal temp farm workers are abuses by their employers. Paid less than what the legal limit is, and are housed in horrible conditions. Their legal status allows for it because they don't want to lose their income.

Large grain farms need to be big. The equipment is so very expensive now the more acres are needed to make it economical

Not true, you may think it is true, but it isn't.
Believe it or not bread was made before the "very expensive" equipment existed.
The reason the "very expensive" equipment exist is because, again, farms are so much larger now, because Agribusiness and their paid representatives in Congress wrote legislation to kill smaller farms.

It is also more efficient

I wasn't commenting on how many farm workers we would have to lose, to cause a problem. I was just saying, when you are in the habit of seeing negativity in something that hasn't even happened yet, it makes it much more difficult to see the positive side of anything. When your mentality is "everything Trump does is going to be a disaster" and he does something that has 10% negative effects, you're more likely to focus on the 10% negative than on the 90% good it does.
And please don't comment on whether or not Trump has done anything with 90% good effects. I'm just saying philosophically, you should try to give yourself a chance to see the good side of things...
Show me where I said that? Oh wait. You can't.

Yeah, but Biden didn't bother to pull the tariffs, did he? He kept them and added new ones.

But inflation is transitory. It'll be ok.

How many experts and presidents need to tell you inflation is transitory before you believe that you are wrong?

Is there any expert that says inflation isn't transitory, or did you just make that up to argue?
Broken record. Yawn.

I don't think I know they don't. I am building my retirement house on a farm. I worked for and with farmers for decades doing farm work and cutting trees for firewood that blow down from storms every year for over 50 years. I will be on lots of farms this year in the next few months. It is a hobby and pass time I enjoy. No need for a gym membership. I am outdoors enjoying good honest hard work that is accomplishing something and saving me money and making food affordable without the use of slave labor.

I was working on a farm at the age of 10. I made 50 cents an hour working 10 hours a days in the summer. To be honest I enjoyed the work and it allowed me to buy my first car at 14. I worked on and drove that car for 2 years getting ready for when I turned 16. I lived at home and walked down to the fields with my friends. There was no need for illegals. Food was plentiful and affordable. It still can be.
