Ok I have a friend who was doing some work on his house involving wiring in a garage he just added, it required him to shut off his power, so he fired up a generator to run his power tools and a fan. The neighbor called the cops on a noise complaint, they refused to do anything since it was not night time or quiet hours, the neighbor went over and complained to him, telling him he called the cops and they will not do anything.

He shut off his generator and went into town to get drywall screws, he came back and found his generator pretty well destroyed, the one neighbor swore he did nothing, his other neighbor said he saw him smash it with a sledge hammer. Cops got called out there and no arrests were made but now it is going to small claims court.

Thing is we used to use his generator camping, it is not that loud, and his neighbors lawnmower is way louder. The question is does anyone here get angry over stuff like this? like running a generator when there is no power, or mowing your lawn with a loud lawnmower, or running a power saw that is loud during construction.

Me myself I can not get it, if it is not at night when I am trying to sleep, it does nothing against me, heck I have a train right behind my house that goes by like 20 times a day and shakes it like an earthquake, I have kids who play around my house screaming and yelling, but I say meh they are kids they aren't hurting anything and turn up my tv.

I have a next door neighbor who will work on cars late at night or early morning sometimes... he got complained on .. not by me.. and so he does it in the garage.. however using a grinder at midnight even in his garage is pretty loud.
He has a couple car frames in his yard along with a lot of junk.. he like the Hispanic version of Sanford & Son. If someone calls the cops on him he will act like he cant speak/understand English.

Wow that is rude, during the day ok, but at night it needs to cut out after a certain time, or he can switch to hand tools. Depending on local laws, usually between 8 and 10 pm starts quiet hours. During noise hours usually no cops will care unless the noise is made with the intent to annoy.

There was a thread on here not long ago where people were suggesting assaulting someone and destroying their property because of noise was acceptable. Hell, they even admitted to it and made it sexual assault when they were at it. It seems pretty insane to me, but I find there is a lot of people out there that agree with that mindset.

That's pretty crazy. We have a backup generator that runs when the power goes out and about 15 minutes a week for a maintenance cycle and we've never had a neighbor complain about it. It's quieter than a gasoline generator though.

Myself, I don't mind if neighbors are making noise during the day. I suppose if it were something just insanely, ridiculously loud, I might say something, but otherwise do what you have to do. Night time is a different matter.

Could you have "easily" used extension cords to obtain power from the house etc instead of running a generator.

"a garage he just added" sounds like the neighbor has endured some construction / noise in the recent past.

You should be careful in the future, having a generator broken could be just the tip of the iceberg there, no ?

Your friend should invest in surveillance cameras. This neighbor issue isn't going to go away.

Making noise during the day is fine. I'd guess it'd be pretty awful if it was all day, everyday, for months on end, but if there's a valid reason and an end in sight I could live with just about anything.

On weekends I don't do anything noisy outside until after 10:00am on Saturdays and 11:00am on Sundays. Let people sleep in a little.

Nothing noisy outside after 9:00pm. Time for everybody to relax.

If the neighbor who smashed the generator worked third shift and was trying to sleep during the day it should have been a conversation that was had long before things went that far. Neighbor sounds like a d-bag. I'd get cameras.

Alot of my neighbors like to party and play loud music until early morning. My next door one will even sing and play the accordion almost right next to my window. Sometimes it wakes me up, sometimes it doesn't. I could really care less though. One time though his friend busted out a trumpet and that did push it a little but we just yelled over to stop and they did.

My father in law works weird hours (3am - whenever), so he goes to sleep around 7pm. He constantly complains about my children making too much noise (their bedroom is right above my in laws suite, and my son being autistic has a coping thing where he walks in circles, especially when he can't sleep). So you can imagine how my FIL feels about noise outside. We had a family having a party up the street (not exactly neighbors, since they lived on a different street, on the other side of the small bridge in our neighborhood in fact) who were being very loud. You could easily hear their music in our house. But it was around 6 or 7 at night. He was not happy. Some people just have trouble tuning things out. I'm not looking forward to the blasting they're going to be doing right across the street.

The noise doesn't bother me. I live in a condo and when someone is hammering on the wall or ripping out floor tiling it sounds loud even when it is actually occurring on the other side of the building.

I am not noise sensitive.

However I have a friend who was always complaining about the noise in the building. She would even complain about the kids outside shooting hoops. She said the noise from the ball drove her crazy. She has moved likely four times in three years. Turns out she has a condition called Hyperacusis caused by damage to her ears.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperacusis

I likely was less than sensitive to her reactions to sound. Although I never said anything to her, inside I would roll my eyes and think..."okay, here she goes again"

So sometimes we do not understand why people over react but our lack of understanding of their situation doesn't mean they aren't actually suffering.

The destruction of the generator though, would indicate to me that buddy there has some major "issues" and makes bad choices. That is not the type of neighbour one wants to live near.

I have an across-the-pasture neighbor who sits in his truck about once a month and continually guns his motor for about an hour and a half. I don't know what his stupid drunken deal is, but just when I've had ENOUGH and am ready to call the sheriff's office, he stops. Those of you reading who live "in town" might be surprised by how much sound carries in the country, especially after 9 or so when the road's gone dark and quiet.

Eh, if it's during normal hours there really isn't a basis to complain unless, perhaps, a garage band practice somehow managed to assemble enough amps to be blasting 150 db at the neighborhood...

I live about 3/4 of my time in a condo in the southern part of my state. This condo is termed as semi detached, meaning most of it is stand alone but some adjoins the condo above. The one room that is adjoined is my master bedroom, It’s directly below a hallway in the condo above me.

The last owner had a little boy about two/three years old and they would allow him to ride outside toys in their home, big wheels, bicycles with training wheels and other. This would start about 6:30 am, the noise would echo thru the handwork floors down to my dwelling. At least a dozen times I very, very politely ask this neighbor If they could manage to stop the early morning riding because I don’t get up that early and I would be fine with 8:00am.

My requests went on deaf ears, they just didn’t care even thought I approached the situation very gingerly knowing he’s just a kid, what can you do. Anyway’s I got feed up, I want to sleep in from time to time until 8:00am. It was when my Marine son was home between deployments that he heard it also, I’ll fix this he stated, he went to the basement and pulled out some old DJ equipment I had stored and hooked it up pointed to the ceiling. He took his best guess when the little terror would be napping and turned it on. Within one minute a knock on the door, yup, the neighbor asking to lower the music level because the child was sleeping. My son was rather harsh with this person, he ask why he has been allowing this little terror to have an indoor dirt bike track that is ridden at 6:00am ?. I never heard a peep after this encounter.

Maybe if I was really bothered and it was late at night and it happened a lot. But not in the day and not if it only happened once at night. Your other neighbor who smashed it with a sledge hammer is a tad bit nuts. I hope the one guy wins in the civil case!

When you are wiring a garage running power from the house is not always an option, He had to shut off the power to his house, as his houses main breaker was 150 amp,and his garage is anticipated to need 200+ amps. This requires redoing alot more that just adding a breaker to the main fuse panel.

Not everyone works during the day, some have night jobs and sleep during the day. Some have small children who need to nap. The noise abatement laws vary, but they usually concern more than just hours of noise. Frequency, volume and duration.

The generator you take camping (dick move btw, others are camping to get away from that ****) may not seem loud to you. But the vibrational noise and the duration can be maddening for others. This is why most municipalities require a construction permit. These are posted and neighbors are warned the noise pollution is coming. Also makes the builder aware of the county's noise ordinances.

Actually, that's incorrect in most jurisdictions.

Actually out here camping is on army corps of engineers parks, which allow even the most obnoctious generator, so long as it is not operated during quuiet hours. The one I have is identical to his, the walmart special except mine has a muffler welded to the spark arrestor, and was not hit by a sledgehammer.

They even make quiet generators, required by national parks, which need to be at the level or quieter than a normal conversation. Also on permits, I am pretty sure he has them, but I have never heard of anyone here needing to notify anyone of construction, just that they need the permit. This is probably different in major cities, but not here.

Just noticed that it was a "garage he just added". He's probably been pissing the neighbors off for months prior.

Doesn't matter if the park allows them, taking your POS generator camping is a dick move. If you can't live without electricity and your toys, stay home. Pilgrims, just gotta take your whole civilization with you wherever you go and impose it on everyone else.

Construction permits have to be publically posted BEFORE construction begins.

150 decibals is extreme, most contractor generators run at 69-80 db, 150 db is going to be louder than a jet engine, a shtogun blast etc.

A contractor generator is about as loud as a lawnmower engine, not the super expensive ones, bt a typical push one. past a certain range every few decibals is like doubling the volume, plus not aall noise is the same, which is why most areas that allow noise have an intent to annoy clause in it.

Publically posted how, like here it would be on the county website, no one has to tell their neighbors here, this is not oregon, this is texas.

And no camping here is practically glamping at best, no real rugged anything, which is why I want to go to blm land in ok for real camping. Here is is a glorified drinking binge to the lake while pretending to fish. lot of people have generators, they either run portable ac for their tents during the dy or one old man I met used it to charge his cellphone, because he had used that spot for 30 years and they have no power hookup, and he had no plans of changing.

Noise and construction ordinances vary by county, not state. Go one county over and the noise ordinances are likely to be different. It's a local control thing. Typically though they follow a template, nationwide. Posting of permits is done on the property where the work is done in a public facing area of the property. Drive by a new development sometime. You'll see the permits posted out front.

I tried googling it, could find no such law in texas saying such, heck when I lved in cali it was not required to post it for neighbors where I lived, just that you have one present, which was usually code enforcement who looks for construction

Not willing to say what would probably happen..

So a happy alternative would be to take a week's vacation and buy the noisiest generator available, a real gas guzzler, point the exhaust in the neighbor's direction, putting the generator right on the property line, and turn that SOB on from morning till night. Sitting, staring in the neighbors direction with a mini fridge full of beer -- the generator's sole purpose.

Neighbor comes over to complain?

"I'm sorry, I can't hear you..."

Neighbor goes to touch the generator?

"Down goes Frazier"
