In response to Nebraska Republicans passing a bill banning gender affirming care for anyone under 19, Nebraska State Senator Megan Hunt, who has a trans son, has vowed to filibuster every bill for the rest of the legislative session.

"You really don't get it," Hunt said to Republican state Sen. R. Brad von Gillern. "You've crossed a line and you've gone too far."

"Don't say hi to me in the hall, don't ask me how my weekend was, don't walk by my desk and ask me anything. Don't send me Christmas cards ― take me off the list," Hunt warned. "No one in the world holds a grudge like me, and no one in the world cares less about being petty than me. I don't care. I don't like you."

This is exactly the sort of fighting spirit that I want to see from Democratic politicians. You can't fight tyranny by taking the high road.

I thought this was the high road. Three cheers for Ms. Hunt!

Good luck to her, she will need it, Nebraska is trying to go full MAGA fascist and it would not surprise me to see them organize in a manner to put her family in danger.

Is the filibuster just as fragile in Nebraska, as it is in the Federal Senate?

Hasn't that become standard operating procedure for the gop? This lady will stand up to the nebraska gop so when they see she isn't budging, in come the death threats.

Good for her for taking a stand to protect a vulnerable minority for the GOP's obviously shameless partisan attacks on trans teens and adults. Thank you.

Better headline: "Elected representative vows to shut down the government unless they allow child sex changes."
Quite telling that this is the hill some people are suddenly willing to die on. This hill that they didn't even know existed 10 seconds ago. Someone here has lost their damn mind...and it's not the people banning child sex changes.

At least she's self-aware. But here's the thing: You have the right to be a petty, hate-filled, vindictive husk of a human being; you have the right to not open your Christmas cards; you have the right to not engage in small-talk with your work colleagues. But you're a public official. Shutting down the government because you want to have your tantrum in public is not OK.

If only there were more of this level of courage in the Republican Party.

Gender affirming care doesn't mean child sex changes. Her son is trans, and she doesn't want it to become illegal for him to get the healthcare he needs. Her son's healthcare decisions should be her responsibility under the guidance of her son's physicians and mental health providers. The government should not get a say in it.

Her son is 12 years old (I'm guessing it's actually her daughter, since this came from Salon and it isn't made clear). The bill would ban "gender confirmation surgery" and hormone treatments for this 12-year-old child. Good. If her child needs to see a psychologist or be prescribed antidepressants, that's still fine.
And in any case, public officials should not shut down an entire state government for 2 million people, because they personally want to be the center of attention and because they personally are affected by legislation for once.
Her son's healthcare decisions should be her responsibility under the guidance of her son's physicians and mental health providers. The government should not get a say in it.
Government most definitely should have a say in what types of medical procedures are ethical and which are not. Providing oversight and regulating health care are among the most important things governments do.

Is it bad that i am getting sick of the issue from both sides?

I get her fighting spirit, but I don't think this is the way to go simply because it goes down the road of politics being a zero sum game in any other similar situation. My take on gender affirming care is one of allowing the option for parents and medical professionals. It's a weird argument that the care of kids should be with the parents until it's not.

Is it bad that i am getting sick of the issue from both sides?
Not really, and mainly because it's such a polarizing issue. It's one where the government creep into personal medical decisions continues, and where those who say the government shouldn't be involved in these kind of personal decisions, suddenly have no problem with that kind of incursion.

I would argue that shutting down the government in response to the passage of unjust and discriminatory legislation is not only morally permissable, it is a moral obligation.

This is the reaction you get when the argument is "if you don't believe what I do then you are pedo groomer"

Good for her.

The GOP doesn't give a shit about trans kids. If they could shit on a different group as a wedge issue they would. They are working to pass legislation that will have a direct negative impact on the life of this woman's child and she has the power to stop them.

Good for her being a mama bear.

Nothing brings out the fury in a parent like having their child be threatened. Good for her for taking a stand against these bullies.

The end result of this logic is every single legislator shutting down the government at the drop of a hat whenever anything pisses them off, because everything suddenly rises to the level of "unjust and discriminatory legislation."

And the end result of THAT logic is a nonfunctional government, or just anarchy.

What seems more likely to you? That all this trans stuff suddenly popped into existence a couple years ago, or conservatives made it a culture war front after losing on gay marriage?

^ This. Mainly driven by social media, starting around 2015.
or conservatives made it a culture war front after losing on gay marriage?
The more accurate framing of this same point is that a certain segment of disaffected leftists couldn't take yes for an answer on gay marriage, because they still wanted to cosplay as civil rights crusaders. So naturally a new civil rights crusade had to be invented, each iteration more preposterous than the last. From "Trans people should be allowed to serve in the military" (reasonable), to "They just want to pee" (I don't care), to "Mastectomies for 12-year-old girls uncomfortable in their bodies" (despicable), all in the span of a few years.

I'll just have to trust that my democratic legislators know the difference between what is and is not unjust and discriminatory.

If a Democrat controlled legislature was working to pass legislation that would deny the very being of a Republican's child and that Republican fought against it... I would likely be on the Republican's side.

Good for her.

“F*ck around and find out”, right?

Well - they messed with HER kid, so now they get to deal with Momma.

I thought the right was ALL about parental rights and fighting for your kids?

If this woman is any indication, they clearly don't.

The fact that so many people in this thread are so interested in the partisan affiliation of the participants, rather than the underlying issue, is quite telling about the political tribalism that goes into building an ideological cult around this absurd topic.

The underlying issue is that the GOP is working to deny access to the medical care that her child needs.

So..... yeah... she is protecting her kid.
