Henry was diagnosed with Rett syndrome, a genetic brain disorder that does not have a treatment or cure, as a toddler.

NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel announced Thursday that his son Henry, 6, has died.

“Our beloved son Henry passed away. He had the softest blue eyes, an easy smile and a contagious giggle. We always surrounded him with love and he returned it, and so much more. Mary and Richard,” Engel wrote on Twitter.

😭😭😭😭😭

Anytime a parent outlives a child my heart breaks a little for them. Much respect for the father.

I saw that story this morning. Very sad for the parents - I can't imagine how difficult that must be.

FWIW, here's a bit of his story.

Henry Engel was born on September 29, 2015. When he was still an infant, his parents noticed that he was not reaching his developmental milestones, and he underwent numerous medical exams to discover the cause. A genetic test ultimately provided the answer: Henry had a mutation in his MECP2 gene. MECP2 mutations cause Rett syndrome, a disorder that typically affects girls after their first birthday, robbing them of learned skills and leaving them with cognitive deficits, loss of speech, and a variety of motor difficulties.

So sad. May he rest peacefully, my sympathy to his family. :(

Waking up every morning to check and see if your kid is still alive is standard procedure here, so I am heartbroken for Mr. Engel, who as a foreign correspondent no doubt had precious little time to be with his son.

Sad...I can't imagine what it would be like to lose one of my own children.

The life of a child is such a precious thing. A parent should never have to bury a child. God Bless your family in your time of sorrow.

So sad. GOD Speed little one 🙏
