NBC issues apology on Zimmerman tape screw-up - Erik Wemple - The Washington Post

By Erik Wemple

NBC apologizes to viewers, but not directly to this viewer. (AFP/GETTY IMAGES) NBC has completed its investigation into the mishandling of the police dispatcher’s conversation with George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case. And the process ends with a finding of error, plus an apology. Here is the statement just issued by the network:

During our investigation it became evident that there was an error made in the production process that we deeply regret. We will be taking the necessary steps to prevent this from happening in the future and apologize to our viewers.
That apology addresses the “Today” show’s failure to abridge accurately the conversation between Zimmerman and the dispatcher in this high-profile case. This is how the program portrayed a segment of that conversation:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.

And here is how it actually went down:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.
Dispatcher: OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?
Zimmerman: He looks black.
Nothing like a little tape editing to paint someone as racist.

I want to know WHO did it.

Where's the part about "The person responsible for the wrongful editing of Martin Zimmerman's conversation has been dismissed." ?

I've already acknowledged that this episode is so highly suspect that it was probably intentional.

However, it is also possible that it was a "simple" error. A misinterpretation of an instruction, inexperienced editor, any number of things.

I personally think someone was playing games, lying by ommission.

But it MIGHT not be.

An apology to their viewers, wow. They need to apologize to Zimmerman and tell us with who the buck stops. Which of the NBC management is going to lose his/her job over this doctoring fiasco.

These people are PROFESSIONALS. You don't make errors like that this day and age, when it is your business to broadcast video-based news and something like race is so highly charged anyway. Don't believe for a second that foremans, supervisors and other bosses weren't involved in at least reviewing the video, and it was just the "new guy's" fault. It couldn't have been anything but intentional.

So . . . where's everyone who was screaming about the editing of Shirley Sherrod?

I'm sure it was an honest mistake, no harm intended.

It's stuff like this that makes me very careful in forming an opinion after seeing the latest media "outrage." One should always take these things with a grain of salt and not be surprised when those who are charged with giving us the "facts" have their own agenda, which almost always comes in the form of getting more viewers. I'm not saying that Zimmerman is automatically innocent. There are many possibilities of what happened and what was going through both Zimmerman's and Martin's heads at the time, but we cannot let media-induced outrage precede a full understanding of the facts when forming an opinion.

It's amazing....

NBC paints the guy as a racist. ABC first claims that there was no cuts on zimmermans head in thier video, clipped video where the whole video shows the cops looking at the back of zimmerman's head, and after being called on it having to come foward and say "yeah he had cuts".....

That plus the whole picture of treyvon as a smiling 13 year old and zimmerman's mug shot....

the media has dirty hands in this case.

I can hear George Snuffleupgus now: "Oh none of us higher ups know how this happened". It was Joe/Jane Know-nuthin in the cutting room that made the boo boo, and we didn't bother to check it out before we put in on air."

The egos abound on news shows and every talking head values their on publicity and image. Do you think they'll try to sell that bologna to the public?

I look for some lower level flunky, Mr. John Q Scapegoat, at NBC to lose his job in the next few days.

Im sure they will fire a black scapegoat..... to put as much more fuel on the flames of racial tension as they possibly can.

How can one of the "personalities" be expected to go down for this obvious crap. And as for those who should be responsible for what is put on the air, they aren't gonna take the fall. So you can bet it will be some cutting room John Q Scapegoat who gets the blame.

Bah, it wasn't a mistake. It was deliberate, anyone can see that. NBC just shot itself in the foot.

NBC is sorry that they were caught, not sorry for editing the tape.

That is the "horse thief theory". You're not sorry your a horse thief, you're sorry you got caught. It sure applies in this case. NBC has no credibility, IMO.

Well, it's not just because of this one incident, they're starting to get a reputation.

Until NBC gives us a name, it's a coverup.

I stopped watching/listening to NBC years ago. Stuck with the others for a while and then gave up on them as a lost cause. Now anything I read in the paper, I look to see who/where the source is coming from and make my judgement as to read or not to read.

When you have no credibility to begin with, you have none to lose.
