Imagine if they ignored the governments threat to use lethal force. I dont wish anyone any harm, but I do wonder what the public reaction would be if soliders open fired on thousands of protesters.

The media will say that it was a legitimate use of weapons against domestic terrorists. And half the population will swallow it.

The man had a pistol and more than 500 rounds of ammunition.
The regime cynically oppresses the opposition. Yes, the opposition is armed in this case, but does it really matter for democracy? In Syria, at least, it did not matter

judging the tone of some of our hard left posters on this board I think a large segment of them would cheer the carnage.

I just find it an odd threat for the gov to make. It feels like they are daring people to challenge their authority. What happens when people take the dare. If the gov starts shooting people I think that is the making for a turning point from words to guns for people.
